Expressions of Interest - Open to MDBA Employees and APS Employees Only Executive Level 1, Assistant Director, Strategic Policy

Non-Ongoing/Section 26 Temporary Transfer/Acting Opportunity for 6 months with potential to extend a further 6 Months

The Position

The Assistant Director, Strategic Policy, plays a key role in supporting the Director to coordinate and develop strategic policies that contribute to the MDBA’s objectives. This position is responsible for facilitating engagement with both national and international stakeholders, managing strategic projects, and providing high-level advice to senior leadership. The role also involves supporting the development and implementation of the MDBA’s 2026-2030 Strategic Plan and managing international engagement initiatives.

Your Key Responsibilities In This Role Are To

  • Support and contribute to the development and implementation of the MDBA 2026-2030 Strategic Plan.
  • Coordinate and deliver the MDBA’s Commonwealth Performance Framework obligations (including our Portfolio Budget Statement, Corporate Plan and Annual Report)
  • Monitor and provide advice on emerging strategic issues that may impact MDBA.
  • Lead the identification and coordination of MDBA responses to national and international policy matters, including inquiries, reports, and government initiatives.
  • Manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including government departments (e.g., DFAT, DCCEEW) and key international partners.
  • Oversee coordination of international delegations, staff exchanges, and international water-related activities that support the MDBA’s priorities.
  • Prepare high-quality reports, briefs, and presentations for senior leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Lead and mentor staff, fostering a collaborative and productive team environment.
