Job description

Department: Mobile for Development

Team: Central Insights Unit

Location: London

Position type: Contract until December 2025

What the hiring manager says

“We are looking for a digital health expert to help us understand how the mobile industry can increase its role and impact in the rapidly evolving digital health sector, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries”

Daniele Tricarico, Senior Director, Central Insights & M&E

About the Team

The Central Insights Unit (CIU) sits at the core of GSMA Mobile for Development (M4D) and produces country- and region-specific research and analysis on the role and impact of digital technologies in advancing sustainable and inclusive development.  Our work spans across many themes and verticals including digital inclusion, gender, financial inclusion, agriculture, utilities, health, humanitarian action and climate action.

The thematically cross-cutting nature of our research means that our knowledge base is wide-ranging, however emerging technologies, such as AI, Big Data and the Internet of Things, are key focus areas, as we bring clarity to emerging opportunities in digital development. Our work directly supports international donors to build expertise and capacity as they seek to advance digitalisation initiatives in low- and middle-income countries.

About the Role

The Central insights Unit is looking for an expert in digital health to drive forward new research on the role of mobile technology in preventing and managing infectious diseases, and to help guide the team’s reflection on the potential contribution of mobile technology and mobile operators in the digital health space more broadly.

Responsibilities for this role will include:

  • Conduct global-level research (developed and developing countries) on the role and opportunity for mobile operators in advancing digital health innovations for managing infectious diseases (IDs).
  • Produce an evidence-based report to help inform GSMA and M4D’s positioning in the digital health space.
  • Through expertise in digital health and command over research methodologies, define scope and research approaches of the main report and additional/complementary pieces.
  • Lead the execution of research activities end-to-end, managing internal and external contributions as required.
  • Generate actionable insights and knowledge assets including analytical frameworks, use case mapping, business model analysis, benchmarks.
  • Use insights to identify a clear and strong value proposition for GSMA members, digital health innovators (e.g. startups, social enterprises) and funding partners supporting the ecosystem.
  • Use insights to support discussions with perspective partners and funders.
  • Disseminate findings though a variety of channels, and represent M4D as the in-house expert on digital health to enhance our position and thought leadership in this area.
  • Stay abreast of innovations and developments in digital health with a view to identify opportunities for the mobile industry to contribute to advancements in the sector.
  • Work closely with M4D’s leadership team to ensure alignment, collaboration and support.

About You

The right candidate will have a track record of conducting research and publishing thought leadership pieces in digital health. You will be excited to join a diverse team that shares a passion for the ways mobile can empower people. You will have most or all of the following:

  • A strong foundation and demonstrated expertise in digital health.
  • Experience working with stakeholders in the digital health ecosystem, including NGOs, government agencies, donors, and private sector partners.
  • Strong understanding of the mobile industry and healthtech start-up ecosystem, both in developed and developing markets, including an understanding of the commercial opportunity as well as the social benefits associated with digital health innovations.
  • Excellent analytical skills, such as the ability to define research questions, devise analytical frameworks and research methodologies, analyse data and extract insights.
  • An ability to analyse complex problems with the objective of producing action-oriented research.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage research projects, driving them through to completion with minimal guidance from your managers.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and managing productive work relationships, at all levels, including C-level.
  • Fluent and compelling written and oral communications skills in English, including an ability to articulate complex issues in plain language. Knowledge of a second language (e.g. French) would be a plus.
  • A track record of delivering results both through individual contribution and through teams.
  • A proactive approach and a willingness to make suggestions and test new ideas.
