Your tasks
Global Risk Assessment Services (GRAS) is an innovative service and information provider offering environmental and social knowledge for fully traceable and sustainable supply chains. Our activities and impact are expanding and our teams are growing exponentially since the last 2 years. This is why the Technology Projects Department is looking forward to welcome you as Geospatial Data Engineer / Specialist at GRAS headquarters in Cologne. If you are passionate about sustainability and would like to join our highly motivated and diverse teams to make a difference, we are looking forward to your application!

Your main duties will be:
  • Design and implement efficient data pipelines using Python, Scala or other technologies to ingest, process, and store geospatial data from various sources (e.g., remote sensing, GIS) 
  • Utilize geospatial data processing tools and libraries (e.g., sf, terra) to extract valuable insights 
  • Collaborate with frontend and backend developers to integrate geospatial functionalities and geospatial APIs into web applications 
  • Work closely with the QA team to ensure high-quality deliverables and timely issue resolution
  • Proactively identify areas for improvement in existing functionalities and implement innovative solutions
  • Participate in cross-functional project teams to provide geospatial expertise.
  • Manage and maintain version control for geospatial data and code repositories.
  • Provide technical support for GIS platforms and tools used within the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with data governance policies and data security best practices.

Your profile
  • Bachelor's degree in Geospatial Science, Geography, Computer Science, or a related field
  • 2-3 years proven experience in a similar role such as a Geospatial Data Engineer, GIS Developer or relevant work experience in the field of GIS and earth observation
  • Experience with API design principles (RESTful) is essential
  • Proficiency in R programming language and geospatial libraries (e.g., sf, terra).
  • Understanding of GIS concepts, spatial data formats (e.g., GeoJSON, Shapefile, KML), and coordinate reference systems is a must
  • Experience with Docker, Git, tidy data principles. 
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills 
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills 
  • Fluent in English (at least C1)
Advantageous Qualifications: 
  • Experience or familiarity with the Plumber framework 
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools (QGIS, ggplot2, Quarto or Rmarkdown)
  • Experience with data integration and ETL processes 
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS) and its services including EC2, S3 and Lambda.
  • Experience with geospatial databases
