Job Description

The Waterloo Region Record currently has an opening for a Full time Editorial Assistant. The ideal candidate must be able to work evenings and weekends.

  • Enter submitted content into online content management system.
  • Support newsroom in managing flow of content and news stories into print and digital streams. Understand story hierarchy in various platforms.
  • Have a deep interest in current affairs and passion for daily news cycle.
  • Understand contemporary media ecosystem, readership models and paths to subscription.
  • Understand story structure and components of storytelling and how that relates to daily journalism.
  • Be engaged with social media and understand its strategic use in appealing to readers.
  • Play a key role in managing events calendar, promotion and coverage.
  • Monitor, sort and address newsroom email accounts for issues and story assignments.
  • Responsible for tagging and timing stories so they appeal to a wide audience. This includes understanding various newsroom tools and website page management.

Salary Range is $41,703.48 to $50,169.60

Qualifications
  • Effective organizational skills, ability to manage time and prioritize tasks appropriately.
  • Ability to excel in a daily news cycle and deadline-driven and demanding environment.
  • Team-oriented individual that can build professional relationships with team members.
  • Understanding of SEO and social media algorithms
  • Competent in social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and possess online posting skills.
  • Demonstrated communication skills, verbal and written.
  • A strong interest in local journalism.
  • Journalism degree not necessary but and asset
