POSITION SUMMARY:

The Water/Wastewater Plant Operator is responsible for the daily/routine maintenance of the Water/Wastewater Plant on property. Areas of knowledge and experience would include daily operations of the Water/Wastewater Plant. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Controls all valves for the proper flow of water into and through the treatment process.
  • Monitors and controls the appropriate application of all chemicals to the water during the treatment process.
  • Performs a variety of chemical/laboratory tests of water at prescribed intervals to determine chlorine residual, turbidity, alkalinity, and temperature levels.
  • Monitors and interprets chemical test data, plant machinery and water in process to track plant operations and to make necessary adjustments.
  • Operates filter units and backwashes at prescribed intervals or when necessary; super chlorinates filters when put into service and keeps records of filter maintenance and problems.
  • Performs minor maintenance and emergency repairs to water treatment machinery.
  • Maintains records of treatment operations.
  • Starts pumps or machines that malfunction; assists with minor or routine machinery maintenance and makes the necessary emergency repairs; performs a regular schedule of preventive maintenance; maintains clean buildings and other work sites.
  • Assists with and inspects machinery and monitors control panel gauges, recording instruments. 
  • Collects and prepares periodic samples for laboratory; records data on forms and enters into computer system.
  • Assists in the maintenance and repair of buildings, mechanical equipment and appurtenances pertaining to water treatment, and water pumping.
  • Unloads and handles chemicals, supplies from vehicles to storage, and chemical feed machines.
  • Monitors and operates electronic and manual controls to operate flow control valves, pump stations, wells, water treatment equipment, and water quality analyzers to maintain optimum water system conditions.
  • Adjusts dosage of treatment chemicals used for disinfection and corrosion control. This may include working with hazardous chemicals such as chlorine and sodium hydroxide.
  • May be required to respond to 24-hour emergency calls for assigned work area to perform emergency building or equipment repairs during off-duty hours using a vehicle, telephone, hand, power and specialty tools and necessary materials.
  • Receives and reviews work orders/requests to determine, estimated cost and man-hour requirements. Requisitions and/or purchases supplies and materials.
  • Performs prescribed maintenance checks as scheduled.

  • Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of sewage. Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and tests results to determine load requirements.
  • Starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of raw sewage through filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
  • Maintains, operates, repairs and replaces equipment as necessary includes gauges, pumps, filters and other controls and equipment (such as recorders, flowmeter and other water quality monitoring equipment).
  • Maintains log of operations and records meter and gauge readings.
  • May collect sewage sample, using dipper or bottle and conduct laboratory tests, using testing equipment, such as colorimeter.
  • Collects samples and identifies physical or biological characteristics of wastewater required in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements; and gathers and tests wastewater samples for plant efficiency reports as required.
  • Ability to lift/drag/maneuver fire hose (50 to 200 feet long) and handle same under 60 PSI of pressure; operates/turns small (4-inch) to large (12-inch) valves. May be assigned to wear a respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as needed.
  • May be designated according to specialized activity or stage in processing as Activated-Sludge Operator (sanitary ser.); Pump-And-Blower Operator (sanitary ser.); Sludge-Control Operator (sanitary ser.); Sludge-Filtration Operator (sanitary ser.).
  • Adjusts system operation to meet changing needs and demands.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment. Trouble-shoots malfunctioning equipment to determine cause and corrective action needed.
  • Reads and records various gauges, meters, and charts. Maintains operational records and logs.
  • May be required to respond to 24-hour emergency calls for assigned work area to perform emergency building or equipment repairs during off-duty hours using a vehicle, telephone, hand, power and specialty tools and necessary materials.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

 

  • Must have a Class C or higher Water/Wastewater Licenses with appropriate sub classes.

 

  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty staff, students, and coworkers is also required.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule that includes evening and weekend duty.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Must be able to speak English.

These skills and abilities are typically acquired through the completion of a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as through recreational experience.
