Job description

At Carrum, we live and breathe the mission of transforming the healthcare system to create an unmatched experience for patients. If you are passionate about changing healthcare and want to finally get rid of surprise bills, poor quality, and high prices, while thriving in an entrepreneurial, cutting-edge environment, we would love to connect with you.

In 2014 Carrum reinvented the Center of Excellence (CoE) category in digital health. We are the only company in this space with a digital platform and mobile app powering this novel marketplace. Today, most of the US population lives within a 3 hour driving distance of a Carrum CoE and our providers rank in the top 10% nationally. Our team’s execution has been recognized by the venture community and we’ve raised more than $50M in aggregate from investors like Tiger Global Management and Wildcat Ventures. Our impact has been externally proven in a 2021 RAND Corporation study and featured as a Harvard Business School (HBS) case study.

Our growing Data Engineering and Operations team is looking for a Senior Data Engineer with a strong combination of mature technical skills, creativity and curiosity, and a strategic approach to problem-solving. The ideal candidate is a team player who has designed, implemented, and expanded maintainable, scalable data products and is comfortable with shifting task prioritization in a high-growth mode start-up. This position will enable analytics, scalability, and a portfolio of data products for both internal teams and external consumers. You will be part of creating the data foundation that is critical to our mission.

This is a full time position, the salary range for this role is $140,000 - $160,000 depending on level of experience and geographic location.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will…

  • Develop and maintain creative solutions to evolving challenges that span data ingestion, processing, and modeling.
  • Master the ins and outs of our healthcare datasets, including medical claims and insurance eligibility.
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders to properly understand data needs. Grow and maintain pipelines that power analytics, machine learning, and data products in our application layer.
  • Partner with the analytics and data science teams to understand and optimize downstream data usage and with the devops and software teams to foster a cross-team approach to infrastructure and engineering.
  • Understand HIPAA compliance and support Carrum’s success in this area.
  • Participate early in the development of a robust data foundation and infrastructure, implementing quality control, ETL, build pipelines, internal reporting systems based on AWS Cloudwatch and Tableau, and self-service tools as the company grows.
  • Have a direct impact on the technical direction and product roadmap of the company.

We’re excited about you because you have…

  • 10+ years professional experience as a data engineer, including ownership of data products and fluency with engineering best practices.
  • Previously designed and built data platforms while partnering with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with a variety of data engineering technology and a willingness and ability to learn new tools. We’re specifically looking for someone who can dive into Python, postgreSQL, AWS Athena, AWS compute jobs (batch jobs, Lambda functions, and Glue jobs), and docker and is willing to dabble with Bash and Ruby.
  • A history of designing systems with an approach centered on data quality and scalability.
  • An appreciation for the challenges and optimizations relevant to an early-stage start-up environment.
  • Interpersonal skills – you don’t have a hard time being empathetic, courteous, and collaborative.
  • Experience in the healthcare space or another highly-regulated industry.
  • If you’re excited about what you read here, we look forward to hearing from you, even if you aren’t sure whether you meet all of the qualifications.

Why you’ll love working with us...

  • We’re a hard-working, humble, and compassionate group motivated to solve the hard problems in healthcare today. You’ll work with talented, experienced co-workers from companies like Booz & Company, Livongo, 98point6, Google, and Optum. We believe in using data to inform decisions, technology to make our jobs easier, and creative thinking to pave the future.
  • We are working with some of the most recognized and esteemed names in the country. Top hospitals like Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Stanford Health Care, Scripps Health, and Rush Health have joined our platform. Employers who use our benefit include Walgreens, US Foods, United Airlines, and large public sector organizations like the self-insured schools of California, and the State of Maine.
  • We empower team members to be autonomous and provide a collaborative environment where you get support and healthy feedback. You can bring your authentic self to work every day and are encouraged to help others do the same.
  • We carve out time to let go of work to celebrate our successes and have fun. We’re all working remotely right now, but prior to the pandemic a few of the monthly activities we enjoyed included group dinners, bowling, and hiking. Now we bring the fun online with holiday costume contests, arts and crafts activities, musical events, weekly meditations, and gratitude sessions.
  • You’ll feel proud that the work you do each day directly impacts people’s lives in big and meaningful ways.

Other benefits:

  • Stock option plan
  • Flexible schedules and remote work
  • Chicago and San Francisco offices available
  • Self-managed vacation days, within reason
  • Paid parental leave
  • Health, vision, and dental insurance
  • 401K retirement plan
