Summary of Job Duties:
The Senior Cardiac Surgical First Assistant is a highly qualified individual who has demonstrated expertise in cardiothoracic surgery and possesses a niche set of skills to manage cardiothoracic patients in the surgical setting. The Cardiac Surgical First Assistant will report to the Cardiovascular Service Line Nursing and Administrative Director. Within this role, this position will first assist in various duties during the surgical procedure such as endo vein harvesting for Coronary Artery Bypass, Aortic, Mitral and Tricuspid valve repair/replace, aortic aneurysm and thoracic cases. This position is a critical member of the team as we offer surgical solutions to the most complex cardiac patients in addition to developing an advanced heart failure and mechanical circulatory support programs.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Eight years’ experience required as a Surgery Assistant. Experience in an active cardiac program exhibiting a high degree of understanding regarding hemodynamic principles for the cardiac patient and how they relate to patient management. Must also have experience demonstrating the ability to assess these parameters and precisely relay the information to the appropriate physician or support personnel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • More than ten years’ experience preferred as a Surgery Assistant or equivalent with a minimum of five years’ experience in an active cardiac program exhibiting a high degree of understanding regarding hemodynamic principles for the cardiac patient and how they relate to patient management. Must also have experience demonstrating the ability to assess these parameters and precisely relay the information to the appropriate physician or support personnel.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical stamina to work in long shifts and move or lift patients and heavy equipment.

License, Certificates, or Registration:

  • Certification: Current certification as a first assistant (CFA), surgical assistant (CSA), or assistant in surgery by one of the following:
  • National Board of Surgical Technology and Assisting (NBSTSA),
  • National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA),
  • American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA), or
  • National Assistant at Surgery Council (NASC).

Special Knowledge, abilities, and skills:

  • Good manual dexterity and working knowledge of cardiothoracic surgical procedures and tasks.
  • The ability to work in a stressful environment.
  • Excellent team working and communication skills.

Additional Information:

  • Assists in compiling statistical data regarding surgical procedures/outcomes for biomedical research, intra-operative procedure notes, quality assurance, and/or other purposes.
  • Attends cath. and surgical conferences, in-service training, and continuing medical education programs as appropriate to maintain clinical expertise and certification. 
  • Assists in pre and post-operative teaching, training, and the orientation for new personnel, as appropriate.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Utilizes expertise in heart transplant surgery and mechanical circulatory support therapy to develop advanced heart failure surgical program.
  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with UAMS operating room staff.
  • Responsible for case preparation including schedule review, posting slip review, verification of equipment availability, and retrieval of patient images and other necessary information.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary in cardiothoracic surgery, including providing retraction of tissue for optimal visualization and appropriate retraction instrument and/or technique. This position will fulfill a surgical first assistant who has appropriate training also performs, under the direct supervision of a surgeon and in compliance with hospital policy, other procedures including but not limited to vein and graft harvesting, implant and graft preparation.
  • Assist in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, use and application of appropriate surgical instrument for the task, placement of ties, placement of suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other measure as directed by the surgeon
  • Use electrocautery (mono and/or bi-polar)
  • Clamp, ligate, and cut tissue per surgeon’s directive
  • Close all wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous and skin) as per surgeon’s directive
  • Insert drainage tubes, per surgeon’s directive
  • Endoscopic Saphenous Vein and Radial Artery Harvest
