Job Summary

Academic Advisors promote an inclusive environment that challenges and supports students by providing meaningful opportunities for student learning, development, and integration of curricular and co-curricular experiences. Advisors are dedicated to empowering students to be active responsible learners while guiding students to make well-informed decisions that lead to the achievement of students’ educational, career, and life goals.
 
Create an open, respectful, and inclusive environment by utilizing an equity-minded, student-centered practice that emphasizes mutual respect, dignity, self-awareness, and authenticity. Center the student in an asset-framed approach where advising differentiates educational guidance to meet students where they are and acknowledges the critical value of each student’s unique social capital. Empower students to be active responsible learners and assist them in making well-informed decisions. Guide students in course selection and the process for registering for courses. Identify campus activities and program opportunities related to students' major. Maintain a consistent pattern of contact and communication with assigned students. Use data to provide timely outreach to students on their academic progress and conduct audits on student’s degree progress. Assess when a student’s situation requires referral to campus resources. Maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records. Teach students about the university’s structure, systems, policies, and practices.

 

Who We Are: 
The Veterinary Nursing Distance Learning (VNDL) program is the #1 Veterinary Technician program in the nation and allows students flexibility to learn at their own pace and craft a unique pathway to success. The curriculum combines online courses with clinical mentorship experiences preparing graduates to pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) with a 90-96% pass rate, well above the national average of 68%. The VNDL program was one of the first completely online Veterinary Technician programs having launched in 2002. The program is continuing to grow having increased enrollment by 40% in the last year alone. As an academic advisor for the VNDL program, you will have the opportunity to interact with students that represent a wide variety of backgrounds, ages, goals, and geographic locations. 

 

The position is a hybrid position with approximately 75% working remotely and 25% on-campus. 

Required:
  • Master's degree in higher education or relevant field
  • One year of student advising, recruitment, or other student-facing experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, current and prospective students, parents, and families
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to problem solve and utilize campus resources for individuals and groups
  • Ability and willingness to work in a changing environment
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

 
 

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of undergraduate student development and recruitment.
  • Knowledge of programs and majors at Purdue University and field related to major advised. 
  • Proficiency with online platforms such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams
  • Experience working with non-traditional learners
