What You Will Do:

As an Outpatient Medical Coder, you will oversee the maintenance of medical records and the coding of data from medical records.  Participates in the preparation of reports, provides information, and prepares correspondence regarding patient admissions, treatment, discharges and deaths in accordance with departmental policies and legal requirements governing the release of medical information.

Works collaboratively with providers, other health care professionals and coding team to ensure that clinical information in the medical record is present and accurate so that the appropriate utilization, clinical severity, outcomes, and quality is captured for the level of service rendered to each patient, as well as ensuring compliant reimbursement of patient care services.  Infusion and Injection Charging + E/M Leveling

As an Inpatient Medical Coder you will apply appropriate state ICD-10 and PCS procedure codes as defined for the service type, for coding, billing, internal and external reporting, research as required, and regulatory compliance. You will review clinical documentation and comprehensive review of chart documentation as appropriate to extract data and apply appropriate ICD-10 and PCS codes as defined for the service type, for coding, billing, internal and external reporting, research as required, and regulatory compliance. Under the direction of the coding manager—the coder should accurately code conditions and procedures as documented and in accordance with ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, CMS and any other official coding guidelines established for use with mandated standard code sets.

What You Will Need:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a US Citizen and willing to undergo a federal background check as part of the onboarding process
  • 1 year (post CPC-A experience) previous medical coding experience in Outpatient, Inpatient or Pro Fee 
  • Certifications
    • ONE or more of the following certifications obtained through the AAPC or AHIMA
  • Professional Coding Certifications
    • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC): Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
    • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA): Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist – Physician (CCS-P)
  • Evaluation & Management (E&M) Coding Certifications
    • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC): Certified Evaluation and Management Coder (CEMC)
    • National Alliance of Medical Auditing Specialists (NAMAS): Certified Evaluation and Management Auditor (CEMA)
  • Institutional Coding Certifications 
    • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC): Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
    • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA): Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)

What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Experience with trauma, strokes, cardiac, cancer, general and vascular surgery
  • Federal or Military medical coding experience
  • Experience working in any of the following systems:  EPIC, Cerner, Next Gen, Allscripts or any other EHR.
  • Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology.
  • Experience with Coding clinics ICD-10-CM and PCS.
  • Experience with Government and other Payer guidelines as they relate to compliant coding.
  • Willingness to maintain professional credentials at all times.
  • Associates Degree
