Job description

About Us

At ANZ, we're shaping a world where people and communities thrive, driven by a common goal: to improve the financial wellbeing and sustainability of our customers. Our Institutional bank helps our largest customers move trade and capital around the region, providing our people with great opportunities to build their technical expertise and their careers.

About the Role

As a Senior Lawyer in our US Legal team you’ll play a key role in providing legal advice on New York State and U.S. federal law to ANZ’s business in the US and, in the case of cross-border transactions, globally, supporting the day-to-day business and new business initiatives.

Banking is changing and we’re changing with it, giving our people great opportunities to try new things, learn and grow. Whatever your role at ANZ, you’ll be building your future, while helping to build ours.

Role Location: New York

Role Type: Permanent, Full time

What will your day look like?

As a Senior Lawyer, you will:

  • Provide support with respect to transactions with US corporations, banks, funds, and other institutional customers that are originated out of our New York branch and transactions that are cross-border with US entities.

  • Provide support with respect to a range of credit facilities (e.g., term and revolving credit facilities) and credit support documents (e.g., parent guarantees), and for trade and supply chain facilities including letters of credit (standby LCs, surety LCs, fronting agreements), and trade and supply chain payables and receivables (e.g., master participation agreements and asset-specific participation agreements).

  • Assist in formulating and implementing approaches to reduce the Bank’s exposure to legal and U.S. regulatory risk and interpreting the same to develop new products, processes and policies.

  • Identify legal risks arising from existing business and new product initiatives and provide legal advice to the business on practical solutions to address such risks.

  • Minimise legal costs by limiting reliance on external legal support, and where external support is necessary ensuring competitive pricing, and then instructing and managing the use of external legal services to ensure legal requirements are met within budget and agreed timelines.

  • Seek continuous improvement in the provision of legal support in terms of outcomes for customers and the bank, efficiency and risk management.

What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

  • Must be a New York-qualified attorney with strong experience dealing with a wide range of matters concerning banking law and practice in the US as it affects a major international bank, such experience having been obtained with a major global law firm and/or financial institution.

  • Able to manage high-value contract negotiations to reach acceptable agreement between ANZ and its Institutional customers when there are differing needs and agendas, and where leverage is limited.

  • Able to articulate complex legal points in concise, plain-English terms, and to provide commercially-balanced solutions to contract negotiations.

  • Promote legal and commercial solutions to assist business units in completing transactions successfully and within credit limits.

  • A strong understanding of credit and trade/supply chain products and documentation

  • Experience with derivatives products (swaps, forwards, caps), repo/reverse repo and ISDA, GMRA and MRA documentation.

  • Have a solid knowledge of key US legislative, regulatory and industry requirements relevant to ANZ’s global activities.

  • Proactively inclined to support future business opportunities or bring about an improvement, e.g. introduce process change to alleviate pressure at busy times.

  • Awareness, and the ability to anticipate potential challenges and risks, and prepare for adverse events and draw up contingency plans.

You’re not expected to have 100% of these skills. At ANZ a growth mindset is at the heart of our culture, so if you have most of these things in your toolbox, we’d love to hear from you.

So why join us?
