GENERAL FUNCTION:

Individual is responsible for managing the development, execution and leadership of the Credit Risk Review (CRR) Continuous Review program for assigned CRR team and/or line of business units.  Primary components of the CRR Continuous Review program include (i) the critical and independent evaluation of the accuracy and effectiveness of credit risk management processes across the Bancorp through an assessment of risk identification/rating, underwriting, new origination, borrower selection and portfolio management practices; compliance with Bancorp loan policies, procedures and applicable laws and regulations; problem asset administration and loan impairments/charge-offs; (ii) a review of credit quality and related trends on a portfolio, industry sector and/or product basis; and (iii) the identification of emerging risks.  Attend (as required) regular meetings with executive management, senior leaders, regulators, external auditors and first and second line business personnel.

While operating within the Bank's risk appetite, achieves results by consistently identifying, assessing, managing, monitoring, and reporting risks of all types.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Display an advanced background, understanding and technical proficiency in all pertinent lending and credit risk topics, including risk appetite and framework, Bank policies and procedures, and risk monitoring and mitigation practices for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Maintain awareness of general economic conditions, industry trends and product specific issues. Display an advanced working knowledge of pertinent regulatory issues and sound lending practices and their relative impact on credit risk. Assist CRR management team in ensuring CRR meets regulatory heightened standards expectations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze and assess credit risk in highly complex Commercial borrowers and portfolios and adequately support all conclusions.
  • In conjunction with CRR leadership team, establish key annual goals and risk-based business plans for assigned areas of responsibility and update as necessary throughout the year.  Identify, elevate and promptly address variances to plan.  Assist in ensuring CRR procedures remain current and correctly reflect actual/desired practices.
  • Complete or ensure the completion of all aspects of required continuous review activities for assigned Commercial portfolios with minimal supervision and in accordance with CRR procedures, deadlines and performance/financial plan objectives.  Manage, lead and/or participate in horizontal, targeted and other portfolio review activities. 
  • Present CRR activities and results (as required) at regular meetings with executive management, senior leaders, regulators, external auditors and first and second line business personnel.  Complete or assist in the preparation and dissemination of all related and required quarterly/ annual summaries of results in an accurate and timely manner, including an annual assessment of credit risk and the overall quality of assigned portfolios.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of key line of business strategies, risk considerations, portfolio quality trends and open issues and observations for assigned portfolios, while maintaining current and forward-looking views on aggregate portfolio risk levels.  Attend applicable Committee, portfolio review, problem asset review and business controls meetings, and hold routine informational meetings with first and second line senior business leaders and personnel to gain and share perspectives on these matters.
  • Effectively challenge and provide consultative advice to first and second line senior business leaders and personnel on risk ratings, credit risk management practices, emerging risks, borrower/portfolio credit quality trends, strategies, policies, organization design and/or staffing levels and expertise. 
  • Work in a balanced and consultative manner with the first and second lines of defense to develop positive working relationships and to provide feedback on the results of continuous review activities.  Ensure the timely socialization and publication of concise and well-written reports that summarize review results, meet the information needs of report recipients, and include issues, observations and recommendations for improvement (as appropriate).  
  • Manage a system of accountability for open CRR issues, observations and recommendations under assigned areas of responsibility.  Solicit appropriate action plans and responses from responsible management that address root causes, resolve CRR’s concerns and mitigate the overall risk to the Bancorp.  Assist CRR management team in promptly resolving any matters requiring attention (MRAs) or issues assigned to CRR with sustainable improvements to business practices.
  • For Commercial roles, manage and execute work processes that review the accuracy of assigned risk ratings (i.e. regulatory, probability of default and loss given default ratings) and accrual status utilizing knowledge of Bancorp policies, risk rating models and definitions.  Effectively convey rating changes to first and second line business leaders and personnel with minimal assistance from manager and promptly escalate any unresolved disagreements to their manager and/or CRR Director.
  • Complete quality assurance review activities (i.e. active engagement in effective challenge meetings, secondary reviews of work papers and supporting review process documents, proficiency in providing peer-to-peer feedback, etc.) and assist in sustaining a strong CRR quality assurance program to ensure the consistency and accuracy of CRR work products and review results. Use quality assurance results constructively for employee and personal development and to make recommendations for program enhancements.
  • Assist in driving a continuous improvement approach to process management within CRR, including making appropriate recommendations for change, in order to gain efficiencies and ensure the effectiveness, consistency and relevance of CRR processes. Benchmark best practices with peer institutions and incorporate into CRR procedures as appropriate. 
  • For employee manager roles, assist the Director in evaluating and ensuring the adequacy and expertise of resources needed to meet the CRR plan and performance objectives and fulfill the roles and responsibilities of the group.
  • Share review findings and emerging risks with Internal Audit and other Risk functions and coordinate work efforts to ensure appropriate coverage and independent oversight of credit risk management processes across the Bancorp.
  • Assume leadership roles and/or participate in due-diligence reviews of potential Bank acquisitions and other special projects as requested. 
  • Recruit qualified candidates to fill open positions and maintain a pipeline of qualified potential talent to ensure appropriate staffing levels, expertise and bench strength are maintained.  For employee manager roles, maintain a succession plan for all critical CRR positions under your supervision.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES (AS APPLICABLE):

Individual may be responsible for developing and managing direct reports to ensure optimal performance to achieve CRR’s goals and performance objectives. 

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in a business related field.  Graduate degree in relevant field (Business, Finance or Economics) preferred.
  • Minimum of 12 years lending and/or credit related experience, with a minimum of 7 years managing or leading employees in project management assignments.  Credit Risk Review or similar loan review or regulatory agency managerial experience preferred.
  • Possess sound leadership and excellent interpersonal, analytical and verbal/written communications skills.
  • Ability to display a positive business presence and exercise sound judgment when interfacing with executive management, senior leaders, regulators, external auditors, first and second line business personnel and peers.
  • Strong project management and presentation skills and ability to quickly synthesize data to reach accurate conclusions.
  • Demonstrate strong influencing and negotiation skills that are leveraged to reach effective outcomes.
  • Proficient in MS-Word, MS-Excel, MS-PowerPoint and other related PC applications.
