Job Description

Historical Building Architect

The Historical Building Architect will be responsible for evaluating and documenting buildings and structures at various Department of Defense (DoD) facilities to determine their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This role involves conducting architectural surveys in accordance with Virginia's standards, writing comprehensive technical reports, and preparing Historic Property Inventory Forms. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in architecture and the ability to pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Historical Building Architect: Pay commensurate with experience. Full time benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K, and other possible benefits as provided. Benefits are subject to change with or without notice.

Historical Building Architect Responsibilities Include:

  • The position will be required to record and evaluate buildings and structures at various DoD facilities for NRHP eligibility. The buildings and structures will be required to be surveyed in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Architectural and Engineering Documentation (National Park Service [NPS] 1990), the 2003 update to the Secretary of the Interior’s Guidelines for Architectural and Engineering Documentation (68 Federal Register [Fed. Reg.] 139 07/21/03), Virginia standards and guidelines (VDHR 2017), and Virginia Department of Historic Resources’ photographic documentation requirements (VDHR 2016).
  • This person shall write technical reports. The technical report will present the results of the architectural history survey. This report will include a project description, a historic context, a description of the methods used to complete the survey, the results of the survey, a copy of completed facility Historic Property Inventory Forms (one for each evaluated building), and a copy of the V-CRIS record(s) for each building. The report will be illustrated with maps, drawings, and photographs as appropriate.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Historical Building Architect Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:

  • BS or BA in Architecture
  • Minimum of at least 10 years professional experience
  • Must at a minimum meet the SOI’s Professional Qualifications Standards (36 CFR part 61) and/or the Secretary of the Interior’s Historic Preservation Professional Qualification Standards (proposed) (62 Federal Register [Fed. Reg.] 119, 06/20/97)
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
