Drs. Judit Puskas and Ajay Shah of the Department of Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering Department within the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is hiring an Education Program Specialist 3 ( ERC Diversity, Outreach and Education Program Manager) to work in the FABE TARDISS Engineering Research Center located in Wooster, OH.

The ERC Diversity, Outreach and Education Program Manager for the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center (ERC) “Transformation of American Rubber through Domestic Innovation for Supply Security (TARDISS)”, provides vision, leadership, strategic direction, and day-to-day operations management for the diversity, outreach and education efforts of the ERC, specifically for the area of Diversity and Culture of Inclusion, and Engineering Workforce Development. TARDISS has a five-year budget of $26M plus cost share, renewable for another five years, and has partnered with 6 other institutions.

Key responsibilities include:

The Diversity, Outreach and Education Program Manager serves as central manager for diversity, outreach and education in the areas of Engineering Workforce
Development and Diversity and Culture of Inclusion for the Center, acting within the policies and procedures of the university, and the National Science Foundation Cooperative Agreement, to achieve Center goals around Engineering Workforce Development and Diversity and Culture of Inclusion. The ERC works with the Center Director and the other stakeholders to develop TARDISS mission and goals; works to ensure the TARDISS program initiatives are in alignment with the outreach and research objectives of the TARDISS Engineering Research Center; assists with the identification of new funding and grant opportunities; facilitates communication between external stakeholders and the TARDISS Center; build relationships that will grow the TARDISS Center and attract new funding sources; works with the external evaluator on the development and statistical analysis of data for the TARDISS professional development and inclusion efforts; serves as primary representative between TARDISS outreach and inclusion and other OSU units, contributes to the preparation of TARDISS annual report and completes other duties and tasks as assigned; the ERC has multiple missions (convergent research, workforce development, diversity and culture of inclusion and industry partnership) and the Diversity, Outreach and Education Program Manager is responsible to manage engineering workforce development, diversity and create a culture of inclusion.


This position reports up to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Judith Puskas) and the Co-Principal Investigator (Dr. Ajay Shah) and reports directly to the Director of TARDISS with a high level of accountability and collaboration expected with the university leadership team. With the Director and PI, the Diversity, Outreach and Education Program Manager is responsible to:


- Create Diversity and Culture of Inclusion (DCI) data collection plan, including demographic surveys, faculty/staff surveys, student focus groups Plan and perform experiments and surveys; collect, record and analyze data; interpret data analysis results and draw inferences and conclusions; present research results to committee; use research results to write reports, papers and reviews and present findings in journals and conferences; collaborate with research teams, industry stakeholders and government agencies; create and sustain the recruitment and support of students; recruit high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to contribute to the EWD; develop/implement a strategy for connecting students to TARDISS faculty and staff; ensure that regular interactions and convergent activities are taking place between engineering workforce development and industry partners; plan and coordinate yearly DEI trainings; coordinate STEM-based training; develop, implement and monitor engineering workforce development programs ensuring that the rubber industry workforce generated by TARDISS will mirror the general population in female and URM participation; plan and implement outreach and education activities; create a report sponsoring agencies and universities on the EWD and DCI effort; direct EWD and DCI faculty, staff and students to meet targets and maintain timely reporting plan meetings, workshops and other events related to EWD and DCI.

This position may require some travel and is hybrid working 1-2 days per week in the office at the FABE TARDISS Engineering Research Center located in Wooster, OH.

At least 4-6 years of experience working with community outreach or training programs. Outstanding verbal, written, and visual communication skills. Ability to: 1) deal with ambiguity and work toward goals in a complex, diverse environment with multiple, changing demands; 2) develop strong relationships and to work with senior-level administration, faculty, and staff to reach shared goals; 3) understand the faculty
mindset and have participated in significant projects; and 4) lead through influence as well as positional authority. Demonstrated skills in conducting strategic planning for sprawling, emerging, enterprises with yet-to-be defined channels, resources, and partners.

Desired Education:
Master’s Degree or Ph.D. desired in education, special education, business operations, communications, psychology or related field or an equivalent degree.


Desired Experience:
6-10 years of relevant work experience desired. At least 6+ years of experience in collaborating with external stakeholders; At least 6+ years of experience working with community outreach or training programs. At least 8-10 years of experience in higher education or related areas. Outstanding verbal, written, and visual communication skills. Ability to: 1) deal with ambiguity and work toward goals in a complex, diverse environment with multiple, changing demands; 2) develop strong relationships and to work with senior-level administration, faculty, and staff to reach shared goals; 3) understand the faculty mindset and have participated in significant projects; and 4) lead through influence as well as positional authority. Demonstrated skills in conducting strategic planning for sprawling, emerging, enterprises with yet-to-be defined channels, resources, and partners.
