This portfolio management role is a key member of our Portfolio/Product Management team, optimizing analytical support for the Commercial Middle Market Field organization.  

Advanced Excel and Power BI / Tableau skills are a required for consideration, while coding ability in different languages and applications is preferred (Databricks, Dataiku, SQL, R/Python).  Prior experience within the Insurance and/or Financial Services industry is strongly preferred.  

Compensation Grade: F3

This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization.  Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program

Job Description Summary

As a Specialist, you'll provides detailed analysis at the portfolio level to support development and execution of underwriting, automation and operational strategies to assess market segment performance. We'll count on you, too, to provides support to product and underwriting teams on specific risk characteristics, underwriting appetite, guidelines and business relationships. You may have opportunities to lead cross functional teams to complete key project work.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Gathers information from multiple sources according to company guidelines, to perform analysis. May require gathering verbal information from internal subject matter authorities or partners and data through reports or other external published or non-published electronic means. Provides and applies context and understanding of information to anticipate multiple variables and complexities needed to research.

  • Analyzes regional product performance or specific segments of the book and finds opportunities at the region, state, territory and agency levels. Identifies and analyzes key product, performance and profitability drivers such as distribution, ratings and rules performance, etc. to validate assumptions, identify adverse impacts, trends and solutions. Applies judgement, understanding, and curiosity to data to see opportunities, develop effective recommendations and solutions.

  • Completes work within established time and service standards. May manage timelines and coordinate completion of project work through others.

  • Develops and determines project ideas based on observations, analysis, experience and intuition. Determines necessary steps to process work. Defines data sets, data sources and assumptions needed to complete the analysis. Recommends robust solutions or work around based on analysis, along with detailed action plans for implementation and the resulting anticipated improvement.

  • Identifies work priorities, parameters and implementation plans in collaboration with department leaders. Develops and coordinates project plans, priorities and outcomes across a project team.

  • Consults with internal and external partners to resolve business issues and complex projects requiring discernment or robust solutions. Understands organizational capabilities and uses opportunities to drive maximum value. Consults with leader and product manager on outcomes of analysis work and ideas.

  • Supports agency review process for the region. Promotes teamwork among regional and staff partners to ensure alignment with strategy and development initiatives.

  • Communicates with business partners by requesting or providing requested information; sharing findings and issues with appropriate leaders or groups. Delivers strategic, operational and technical information to peers, leaders and other internal partners. Communicates and presents outcome of projects within team and across the department, region and company.

  • Builds and strengthens relationships with peers and internal partners to support completion of ongoing assignments.

  • Participates in training classes, department and company meetings. Pursues additional education to increase personal, professional and technical knowledge and skills. May assist trainers as a subject matter authority by providing content or delivering information to help educate regional underwriting and product partners. May mentor associates and provide education to others.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Product Associate Vice President, Director or Manager. No direct or indirect reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in insurance, actuarial science, mathematics, risk management, economics, finance, accounting, business administration or related field preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Progress toward or completion of CPCU, AU CIC, INS ARM, actuarial exams or similar designations preferred.

Experience: Six years of experience in underwriting or product preferred. Cross-functional experience from other areas and experience with data analysis preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Detailed knowledge of commercial lines insurance products and pricing architecture, state regulations, underwriting procedures and practices. Working knowledge of financials, trend analysis and competitor data. Proficiency in analytical tools, relational databases, data visualization techniques, query-based language and/or statistical software experience preferred. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to present information, communicate and influence internal and external partners at all levels. Must be skilled in the use of related systems and analytical tools. Ability to work toward results, deal with ambiguity, solve problems, learn on the fly, make quality decisions, see trends and patterns within data. Ability to manage competing priorities, timelines and resources to complete projects.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range.

The national salary range for Specialist, Portfolio Management - P&C : $69,000.00-$142,000.00

The expected starting salary range for Specialist, Portfolio Management - P&C : $76,500.00 - $114,500.00
