Job Summary:

This is a remote coding position functioning under general supervision and utilizing independent decision making. The Coder Inpatient I correctly determines the MS-DRG's or APR-DRGs by reviewing the EHR and computer assisted coding software to assign all appropriate ICD diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient hospital services at our community hospitals. The Coder Inpatient I codes a variety of medical and surgical specialties such as Oncology, Urology, OB/Newborn, Ortho, Cardiology, and Mental Health. Coder Inpatient I is responsible for the admission and discharge coding of all Inpatient Rehab for CMH and Froedtert Hospitals. As needed the Coder Inpatient I is reassigned to Froedtert Hospital to assist with backlogs of OB, Newborn and other less complex inpatient cases and observation coding. Coders in this role communicate with care providers when necessary mainly via the electronic query process. In order to ensure the most appropriate DRG assignment, Coders partner with Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists with the goal of obtaining the most complete and accurate medical record documentation. The Coder Inpatient I will resolve problems and make decisions independently. The coders in this position will apply all departmental coding quality guidelines and meet productivity standards, while maintaining a 95% overall accuracy rate. The coder must understand that the hospital's strategic initiatives (financial, statistical and quality benchmarking) rely on the accuracy and integrity of all data coded by them. Effective communication is vital to this role. Successfully adapting to change and working as a team is extremely important in this position. Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:

A minimum of 1 year of recent HIM experience in a hospital inpatient coding or 2 years of emergency, day surgery, or observation coding is required.

A minimum of 3 years of recent HIM experience in a hospital inpatient coding is preferred.

Highly prefer Inpatient Coding experience

EDUCATION DESCRIPTION:

Completion of Coding Certificate Program or Associate degree in HIM or equivalent is required.

SPECIAL SKILLS DESCRIPTION:

This position requires knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pharmacology.

The ability to adapt to and use tools to support coding functions including the encoder, EHR, and other software applications is necessary.

LICENSURE DESCRIPTION:

At least one of the following credentials is required at hire: AHIMA – CCA, CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, RHIA or AAPC – CPC, COC or CIC.

Additionally, if a candidate does not already hold one of the following four credentials: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CIC, they must obtain one of the four additional credentials within one year of being hired.
