Job Description:

This position is responsible for providing tax and legal expertise for our software products.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor and analyze legislative/regulatory activities utilizing research tools from third party providers, (such as CCH, Lexis-Nexis), and other sources of tax content and communicate/coordinate accordingly to ensure our content is in regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor requirements and product changes and update processes accordingly.
  • Gather, prioritize, and respond to internal/external customers defect and enhancement requests on tools.
  • Determine how tax or rules impact organizational products regarding the addition of new content or the maintenance of existing content.
  • Perform quality assurance tasks following documented processes.
  • Analyze, review, test, and respond to stories and customer requests for data related architecture issues.
  • Ability to stage complex tax content, (eg. situs, STH's, QC's, multiple impositions, etc.) within Vertex products in a logical manner that is consistent with system architecture and platforms.
  • Populate databases to support various types of testing.
  • Support a dynamic environment at Vertex, using agile methodologies, collaborating with other departments, contributing time, effort, and ideas.
  • Enhance job knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing person networks; participating in professional societies; developing an/or maintain proficiency in the latest personal productivity tools is a plus, (ex. Alteryx, Power BI, etc.)
  • Represent Vertex as a subject matter expert at product demonstrations, presentations, seminars, panels, and webcasts if needed.
  • Setting deadlines, defining scope of projects, assist in the review of work completed by the team, raise awareness of roadblocks, and accountable for the teams deliverables. (ex.
  • Functioning as a Product Owner)
  • Look for opportunities to improve work processes and activities by using business technology and other resources
  • Lead complex projects and participate as a team member on projects.
  • Develop, direct, and be accountable for plans for improving team performance.
  • Review, analyze, gather, and interpret tax laws, regulations, ordinances, case law, and literatures. Create and/or review requirements and specifications.
  • Provide guidance to those that they lead on the creation and execution of their work assignments.
  • Contribute to the development of requirements and needs of the Tax Research organization as it relates to tax content, solutions, and functionality.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

  • Developing / ability for Compliance administration (Facilitate information between Vertex and Taxing Authorities).

  • Ability to understand how customers would use Vertex products or equivalent tax solution product.
  • Ability to interpret tax laws and regulations and determine how they apply to Vertex products.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, data science, or similar degree required.
  • Obtained or actively pursuing one or more of the following: Juris Doctorate (J.D.), masters in taxation, MBA, CMI, or CPA certification (active or inactive) preferred.
  • Experience with software testing processes and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects
  • Certifications from recognized institutions that provide certifications, e.g. Certified Public
  • Accountant/Charter Accountant, Project Management
  • Strong experience with research tools such as CCH, Lexis-Nexis, BNA, RIA, etc.
  • 8+ years in a multi-jurisdictional environment with emphasis on Indirect Tax
  • Experience with Vertex or other tax engines a plus.
  • Industry or consulting experience required.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
