Are you motivated to use your financial skills to create meaningful change in our community? Join Ruby’s Place, an innovative and rapidly growing nonprofit dedicated to ending domestic violence, human trafficking, and violent crime.   As our Controller, you’ll play a critical role enabling our continued growth and strong financial controls.   Reporting to the CFO, this position supervises A/P and Grants Administration.  This is a full-time, hybrid remote position with excellent benefits, and annual salary of $125,000 - $144,000, depending on experience.

Founded in 1971, Ruby’s Place is now a $15M nonprofit, and we are rapidly expanding.  Our services include emergency shelter, various housing programs, mental health services, and other wrap-around services.   All of our services are trauma-sensitive and client-centered and we operate with a relational model mindset., (this does not hold true for our housing program).  There are no barriers to participate in our programs.   Led by survivors, our team is committed to reflection, innovation, and connection, fostering a workplace culture that values diversity, equity, and the voices of those most impacted by violence.

What You Will Do:
1. Oversee Accounting Operations.  Manage general ledger, transaction processing, account reconciliations (AP, AR, GL), and ensure timely reconciliations, financial closes and statement preparation. 
2.  Maintain Financial Controls: Ensure compliance with financial regulations, laws, and grant requirements.   Monitor and ensure financial controls. and establish additional controls as needed.
3.  Audit Support:   Assist the CFO and collaborate with external auditors to ensure timely completion of audits (Single Audit, grantor’s audits and worker’s compensation audits).
4. Financial Management and Reporting:   Provide financial information and insights for internal staff and Board meetings.   Assist Executive leadership in making decisions about contracts, purchases, and accounting policies/procedures.
5. Team Leadership:   Train, lead and manage the accounting staff.   Review and support their work to ensure accuracy, consistent, and best practices. 
6.  Collaboration and Continuous Improvement:   Review and improve internal processes for efficiency and effectiveness. Maintain documentation of processes and procedures. Provide training for accounting and other staff as needed.  Work with internal staff as needed to adjust their financial plans. 

Key Qualifications:
  • Nonprofit Accounting Experience. Minimum of 5 years in nonprofit accounting, with significant grant experience, including experience in nonprofit audits.  Experience tracking all financial entries related to grant and local/state/federal agency funding requirements. 
  • Technical Knowledge.   Deep understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance.   Strong knowledge of best practices in AP, AR, JEs, capital assets, balance sheet analysis, and month/year-end closing.  
  • Problem Solving.  Excellent analytic skills, and diligent problem solver.  Keen attention to detail.  Able to balance multiple priorities, and changing circumstances.
  • Leadership.  Proven ability to lead, manage and train accounting staff, and to collaborate effectively across departments.   Strong initiative, self-starter.  Attentive to both individuals and the organization.
  • Communication.  Strong communicator, able to convey complex financial information clearly, patiently, and respectfully.
  • Software.  Proficient in QuickBooks Online (preferred).  Microsoft Excel, and Google Sheets. Experience with accounting software implementation is a plus.
  • Education.  Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, or equivalent.  CPA preferred.

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, salaried position. This is a hybrid position (flex work), with some days required in our Castro Valley Office.   Note:  Applicants must be located in the greater Bay Area.
