The Role

The Vice President, Finance and Controller (VPFC) reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and provides financial leadership, strategy, and operational excellence across its entities including Tides Foundation, Tides Center, Tides Network, and related operations. This role will be responsible for financial and accounting integrity across all Tides entities while leading a team of five direct and over 40 indirect reports. 
The VPFC has the potential to be the Chief Financial Officer successor within a three-to-five-year period.

What you will Do

The Vice President, Finance and Controller will lead Tides Network Finance in achieving its mission by overseeing all aspects of its operations, including:

Financial leadership

  • Envision and lead strategy to sustainably improve financial systems.
  • Work closely with Tides CFO and Finance Senior Directors to build and execute strategic, financial, and operational goals for the organization. 
  • Own Tides’ consolidated financials and accounting data across all Tides entities.
  • Lead and manage annual budget, audit, and compliance across Tides entities in partnership with the Finance Leadership team, ensuring timely delivery, accuracy, and integrity of transactions.  
  • Partner with Chief Financial Officer, V.P., Impact Investing, Executive Team, and other Tides staff to develop, model, implement and manage long term financial strategy to maximize impact and sustainability. 
  • Lead and manage annual budget, audit, and compliance processes across Tides entities in partnership with the Chief Financial Officer, Finance Leadership Team and other Tides departments, ensuring timely delivery, accuracy, and integrity. 
  • Facilitate strategic initiatives and projects aligned with operational goals while ensuring financial sustainability, GAAP compliance, and systems interoperability. 

Strategic leadership

  • Lead development of and ongoing analysis and modeling of Tides various business models for short- and long-term impact and sustainability. 
  • Lead policy development, accounting and reporting services, workflow processes, and governance.
  • Partner with the Chief Financial Officer on Board-related matters including preparation for Board and Committee meetings, active participation in the Audit Committee and the Finance Committee meetings. May liaise directly with the Board as needed.
  • Manage financials for organization wide and board directed projects. 
  • Develop a high-performing financial practice to support the organization’s impact objectives. 
  • Contribute to fostering a financial stewardship mindset across the organization in alignment with Tides’ mission and impact goals. 

People leadership 

  • Develop a high performing financial practice/team to support the impact goals of Tides’ entities and organization. 
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high performing team that consistently models Tides values and JEDI principles. 
  • Collaborate across the organization on Tides’ initiatives and operational goals while representing Finance team considerations on sustainability, GAAP compliance, staff capacity, and systems interoperability.  
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high performing team of direct reports, Including Tides Center, Tides Foundation and Tides Network Finance Teams.

Operational leadership

  • Provide operational leadership by visioning and implementing impact-focused financial systems, reports, and analyses, processes, and solutions as a part of the Tides Finance Leadership team. 
  • Create and maintain operational excellence across Tides Finance, including the quality and reliability of all accounting functions, accurate and timely reporting for Tides’ entities, and the operational fitness of internal controls related to the accounting procedures, policies, and generally accepted accounting principles. 
  • Own Tides' consolidated financial and accounting operations and processes across all Tides entities.
  • Lead projects related to the unique mission, goals and responsibilities of the Finance department including Client Impact, Investments, and Administration.

  • Advanced knowledge of enterprise-wide financial and related systems (NetSuite ERP, Salesforce, ADP) with substantial experience managing, implementing, changing, and integrating processes and systems in a planned and holistic fashion.
  • Expert knowledge of GAAP/FASB standards, knowledge of FAR, CFR, relevant OMB circulars and procedures utilized in a non-profit environment.
  • Prior experience working in a multi-entity environment.
  • Demonstrated partner-centric approach to finance, including understanding and meeting the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and problem/conflict resolution skills; Demonstrates commitment to cooperate and work collaboratively to meet the needs of internal and external clients; ability to strive for high level of satisfaction.
  • Strategic thinker and systems builder with demonstrated success leading change management initiatives.

Education & Experience

  • 15+ years of experience in nonprofit finance management, leadership, fiscal sponsorship, or a related field 
  • Leadership experience in a union-represented environment preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of related work experience can be substituted for a college degree. Academic credentials will not take the place of robust and relevant leadership experience.
  • CPA and accounting related course work strongly preferred.

Compensation

Tides is committed to providing a competitive compensation package. We value pay equity and account for factors such as your location within the U.S., your skills and your relevant experience, and we will not ask for your salary history. Your starting salary will fall into one of three ranges, depending on your location: 

  • National market: $191,000 - $238,800 (Most U.S. states)
  • Moderate market: $208,400 - $260,500 (Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and D.C. metro areas) 
  • High market: $229,100 - $286,400 (New York City and San Francisco metro areas)
