Senior Underwriter, Commercial

Job Description:

Summary:

Underwrites moderate to complex new and renewal business.  Administers and monitors underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.  Reviews both territory and agency book of business including profit/growth results and trends. Provides service and guidance to agents. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work within specific authority level to quote, accept, decline, and modify new/renewal risks within territorial assignment in accordance with accepted underwriting guidelines. 

• Gather, analyze and evaluate risk exposure through appropriate risk documentation.  Adopt proactive actions and/or make proactive recommendations to improve risk profitability.

• Apply knowledge and understanding of coverage forms, rating plans and guidelines in the selection and pricing of individual risks.  Ensure adequate pricing of individual risks through proper classification, accuracy of information and adherence to company underwriting standards and philosophy.

• Provide guidance to agents and other departments regarding various underwriting information. Effectively communicate underwriting decisions and appetite to agents. Reinforce the ease of doing business by meeting or exceeding agent expectations and providing high quality service on a consistent basis.

• Improve portfolio through cross-selling Hallmark coverage, products or service.

• Travel is required to develop and maintain understanding of agency force and territory intricacies.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree from four-year college or university, with 10+ years underwriting and/or related experience.  Must hold or actively working to complete CIC or CPCU designations.

Knowledge/Skills:

• Strong analytical and communication skills. 

• Detail oriented with the ability to work in a team environment and be flexible to daily changing needs and job duties. 

• Demonstrated ability to adapt to change as the company moves forward within its strategic plan.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
