Description Of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities.

The van den Heever research team is led by University Distinguished Prof. Susan van den Heever. Our research focuses on cloud processes, specifically the microphysical and dynamical characteristics of deep convective cloud systems, aerosol-cloud feed backs, convective organization and the representation of these processes in numerical models. We utilize numerical models to achieve our scientific goals, in particular the open-source Regional Atmospheric Modeling System ( RAMS ) that is developed and maintained by the van den Heever research group, and the Weather Research and Forecasting ( WRF ) model. We also draw extensively on space- and ground-based radar observations and drone-made measurements in our research of convective cloud processes. Prof. Susan van den Heever is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the recently awarded $177M NASA INCUS (Investigation of Convective Updrafts) mission, which exemplifies our research in bridging modeling and observations to advance our understanding of convective cloud processes.

Position Summary

The individual filling this position will need to support the INCUS mission by designing, running and analyzing a large suite of high-resolution numerical model simulations. These simulations are used to assist in the development and validation of satellite remote sensing algorithms and products for the NASA INCUS mission. The position also involves using these simulations to explore scientific questions related to convective cloud processes, as well as how they are represented in models and observations.

Required Job Qualifications

  • PhD from an accredited college or university in Atmospheric Sciences or related field.
  • At least 3 years of post-doctoral work or equivalent experience in running and analyzing high-resolution simulations of convective processes
  • Demonstrated record of publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the dynamical and microphysical processes of deep convective clouds

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in working with both the RAMS and WRF models
  • Experience in use cloud object tracking tools
  • Demonstrated skills in programming in MatLab and/or Python
