We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Counsel position! This individual will play a critical role in supporting WEG’s commitment to being an Employer of Choice. This position demands a highly skilled attorney to provide strategic advice and counsel related to compliance with employment laws. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of handling complex employment issues in a law firm or corporate environment, with specific experience related to the financial services industry. 

The salary target for this role is $147,000 - $157,000; this position is eligible for corporate bonus.

Primary Job Functions

Serve as WEG’s primary employment law advisor.

  • Serve as Legal department lead for all employment law matters.

  • Provide legal advice and support to the Human Resources department and company management on a broad range of employment matters including hiring practices, termination, wage and hour laws, and discrimination issues.

  • Work collaboratively with HR to ensure a cohesive approach to employment practices and comply with applicable state and federal employment laws.

  • Advise senior management on employment-related legal risks and mitigation strategies.

  • Work cross-functionally to develop and implement policies and procedures to continually enhance compliance within the employment framework of the firm.

  • Oversee all employment-related claims and disputes.

Employment Agreement Support

  • Draft, review, and negotiate employment agreements, focusing on financial advisor compensation agreements and enforceability of restrictive covenants.

  • Maintain templates of all employment agreement forms, including financial advisor agreements, employee confidentiality agreements, restrictive covenant agreements and separation agreements.

Merger and Acquisition Support

  • Support legal due diligence of employment-related matters in all acquisitions.

  • Liaise with internal Legal team and external counsel to review and negotiate employment agreements with acquisition prospects.

General Legal Support

  • Along with the rest of the Legal team, advise and support on general legal matters arising in WEG’s business, including changes in applicable law and responding to subpoenas or regulatory inquiries.

  • Provides thought leadership on direction of the Legal function.

  • Foster a culture of learning and innovation within the team.

  • Prepares and presents departmental updates for leadership & business units.

Education/Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

  • Active bar membership in MN.

  • 4+ years legal experience, preferably gained in a law firm or in-house at a financial services firm.

  • Good understanding of the legal and regulatory landscape affecting registered investment advisers.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex problems and work collaboratively across teams and disciplines.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects with tight deadlines.
