ROLE SUMMARY

The Manager, College Counseling is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of an innovative and consistently high-quality network-wide school counseling program with an emphasis on college and post-secondary success. The Manager, College Counseling will be part of the Alliance Counseling and College Success Team (CCST), reporting to the Director, College Counseling and supports Alliance’s goal of successful matriculation and graduation from a 4-year college. They will work collaboratively with the larger CCST, Alliance middle and high schools, and cross-functionally across organizational departments. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Support the Director in the development of a continuously improving college counseling program for all scholars. 

  • Contribute to the development of comprehensive  counseling activities and experiences scholars should receive in grades 6-12 to support a strong college-going identity and soft skill set that prepares scholars for success in life beyond Alliance, including college admission, matriculation, persistence, and ultimately college graduation. 

  • Develop and implement college counseling policies, resources, and tools to support counseling teams in their practice. 

  • Create and distribute digital bi-weekly counselor newsletter.

Manage implementation of Counseling and College Success vision and strategies across a portfolio of schools

  • Coach counseling teams on best practices to support scholars’ holistic college readiness including, but not limited to, early college awareness, college and career exploration, SEL and academic planning, financial literacy, and college admissions and matriculation processes. 

  • Partner with school leaders and stakeholders in providing guidance on planning and managing a comprehensive school counseling program with an emphasis on college success. 

  • Leverage data systems such as Naviance and PowerSchool in informing the approach of both network-wide and individually tailored school site supports.  

  • Support counseling teams’ development by serving as a key leader in  the design and facilitation of CCST professional development days, facilitating group learning opportunities for Alliance staff and scholars, and leading regular check-ins, formally and informally, with counseling teams.

Develop and implement programming directly to Scholars and Families that support the Counseling and College Success vision

  • Contribute towards the development and rollout of scholar-facing college readiness and success (CRS) curriculum and resources that are anti-racist, pro-Black, and emphasize early college knowledge and comprehensive college preparedness. 

  • Maintain relationships with community organizations to provide services to scholars and families such as early college and academic preparation programs, scholarship opportunities, financial literacy, and college and career exploration.

  • Serve as the counselor professional development lead responsible for leading the design of annual professional development scope and sequence and overseeing the coordination of all aspects of virtual and in-person PDs for counseling teams and advisory staff.

  • Manage the refinement of Alliance’s college matching strategy, tools, and curriculum; or other similar college-success initiatives.

Develop and implement programming directly to School Site Staff that support the Counseling and College Success vision

  • Partner with school leaders and counseling teams to spread awareness and recruit scholars for partnership programs and extracurricular opportunities.

  • Support the development and successful roll out of college readiness and success (CRS) systems by partnering with school teams in building capacity for sustaining strong models and practices, training advisory teams on CRS curriculum and facilitation, and serving as a thought partner in areas related to college success.  

  • Liaise with internal Home Office teams in support of middle school, special populations, and parent engagement college readiness initiatives and strategy.

  • Mindset. Hold a growth mindset and commit to continuously honing their coaching craft. 

  • Relationship-Building. Have strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills with scholars, families, school sites and Home Office colleagues.

  • Systems-oriented. Approach all tasks/projects with consideration to the Counseling and College Success team strategy and commit to multi-layered implementation.


 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Approach leadership through an unapologetically anti-racist and pro-Black lens

  • Experience creating and facilitating college and career readiness curriculum tailored to the needs of first-generation, low-income, urban students, and communities of color

  • At least 3 years of professional work experience within an urban school environment or organization, at least 2 of those years in college counseling or related field

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university; OR at least 5 years of professional work experience within an urban school environment or organization, including at least 2 of those years in college counseling or related field, and a HS Diploma or equivalent

  • PPS credential preferred, but not required

WORK LOCATION

This position will work virtually in the greater Los Angeles area, with travel to school sites as public health conditions allow. The successful candidate will be given a $400 work from home set-up allowance and receive a monthly stipend of $100.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

In alignment with our commitment to equity for our scholars, Alliance is committed to equity and transparency for our team and offers competitive salaries commensurate with experience as well as generous retirement and health benefits. This position is exempt.

  • Compensation: Alliance provides a competitive salary. Based on relevant prior work experience, our salary range for this role is $72,000-$105,000. This position is also eligible for a $3,750 hiring bonus paid in two installments over the first year of employment. 

  • Relocation: Individuals residing outside of the Greater Los Angeles area are eligible for a relocation bonus of $5,000 for individuals and $7,500 new staff with families/partners. 

  • Health Insurance: Medical, dental, and vision plans options that are covered at 100% of monthly premiums for individual employees and at least $1,000 per month towards family plan premiums.

  • Retirement: Alliance Home Office employees are eligible for a retirement allowance equal to 7.5% of their regular yearly earnings.

  • Paid Leave: Regular full-time 12-month employees accrue vacation at a rate of 10 hours/month for a maximum of 180 hours in addition to 10 national holidays as well as a week for Spring Break and a week for Winter Break. 

  • Professional Development: At Alliance, we believe in supporting staff growth and development. Home Office staff are allocated $500 per year for professional development expenses.
