Job Description

We offer a merit-based work-from-home program based on job responsibilities. After initial training in-person, this specific role could have the flexibility to work from home. While associates are able to work from home, they also are expected to come into the office for certain days when projects, meetings, gatherings, or trainings warrant in-person attendance.

Please note that we are not currently hiring fully remote positions. All candidates must have the ability to work in one of our tech offices from time to time. Our tech offices are in Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Traverse City, Michigan.

Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated insurance carrier, is seeking a motivated individual to join our IT Division as a Java Trainer. Responsibilities include building and maintaining the training programs used by our entire I.T. Division. The primary users of our training programs are the numerous new hires and interns that come into the Division each year, although many existing I.T. associates also take advantage of the programs to learn new programming languages and technologies. The position requires the person to:

• Administer our formal training programs for the IT division, including reviewing and evaluating trainee code. This requires working knowledge of programming languages including Java, and learning and applying Auto-Owners’ best practices for coding.
• Provide support for the other training departments across the Company including the administration our Company Learning Management System (LMS) where all of our course content is hosted and made available to associates
• Work with subject matter experts within the Company to develop new training modules using eLearning development tools such as Lectora, Vyond, and Camtasia
• Coordinate events that provide additional learning opportunities for associates

Desired Skills and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a technology-related field, or equivalent experience is required.
• Knowledge of Java or other object-oriented programming language is strongly preferred
• Enthusiasm for teaching others, especially about coding best practices and production-ready code
• Understanding of effective strategies to facilitate learning
