This role will be part of multiple team functions, designing and building data solutions that support the analytical and reporting needs of the Markel Claims Organization. The Data Engineer will contribute to creating and executing data strategies at both the departmental and business unit levels.
Responsibilities:
- Writing optimized, secure, and scalable data extraction and aggregation code
- Collaborate in designing the data ETL process, including documentation and flow charts
- Developing data solutions to solve technical and analytical challenges.
- Supporting efforts to develop enterprise data models and data cataloging for consistency and efficiency.
- With direction developing and maintaining data pipelines
- Collaborating with global teams to understand analytical and reporting objectives for effective data aggregation.
- Communicating technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Promoting the understanding and use of enterprise data to leverage the power of data and automation.
- Keeping up with emerging trends and technologies in big data and analytics
- Monitoring and addressing issues in the current data extraction processes daily.
Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
- 3+ years of relevant experience
- Proficiency in data integration tools, SQL, and BI tools such as PowerBI and Tableau
- Familiar with ETL applications, data pipelines, and Big Data
- Ability to track and resolve data quality issues from impact analysis to implications for reporting and data analytics.
- Informed about structured and unstructured data dispersed across various formats, sizes, and locations.
- Ability to support data needs across various business units.
- Experience with data cataloging, data certifications, and comprehensive documentation related to data strategy and pipelines.
- Proficiency in Python or Scala or a willingness to become proficient.
- Familiarity with Spark is a plus.
- Familiarity with DataBricks and related technologies
- Familiarity with Azure Data Factory
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- High attention to detail
- Ability to work various hours to support global organizations operating in multiple time zones.
