Department of Revenue is recruiting for a Tax Auditor 1 (Tax Auditor/Entry Underfill) position. We are looking for talented, detail-oriented individuals to join our Personal Tax & Compliance Division in the Compliance Unit. This position is headquartered in our Eugene office; however, the successful candidate may be eligible for in state hybrid work.  Hybrid work consists of performing duties onsite in a standard office environment and working remotely. 

NOTE:  During the training period the job will be in the Eugene office 5 days a week from 8am to 5pm.  After passing trial service, it is a minimum of 2 days a week in the office (depending on workload needs).

In order to be considered for Department of Revenue recruitments, you must reside within the state of Oregon.

What You Will Be Doing

Below is a sampling of job duties. It is not meant to encompass all duties.

  • Conducts in person, virtual, telephonic, or correspondence audits to determine the appropriate adjustment of tax including business income and expenses reported on individual income tax returns by examination of the financial books and records, including tracing receipts and expenses and matching to and from source documents.

  • Develops pre-audit analysis, identified issues, and schedules the necessary appointments.

  • Uses direct and indirect auditing methods, which includes gross receipts test, bank deposit analysis, source, and application of funds, to determine the correct amount of taxable income.

  • Research, interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and Revenue rulings.

  • Prepares audit work papers, audit reports and makes changes to a taxpayer’s return into a computer system.

  • Establishes delinquent accounts, issues refunds or adjusts existing accounts by entering data into computer system.

  • Represents the department’s audit position on appealed audit cases at all appeal states including written objection conferences and the Magistrate Division of the Oregon Tax Court.

This Is What You Need To Qualify


Tax Auditor 1 ($4,536-$6,952)

One year of work experience in tax preparation, auditing, tax audit defense, professional accounting, drafting rules or legislation, providing law training, or developing tax forms or instructions. This experience must have been in either Oregon income tax, corporate income/excise tax, gross receipts tax, sales and use tax, another state or city with a tax structure similar to Oregon, or Federal income tax;

AND one of the following:

a Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or any related field; OR

24 quarter hours (16 semester hours) in accounting or finance including one class in technical writing and one class in Excel and two years of work experience doing either compliance work in a tax program or professional accounting.

  • Professional accounting experience must include at least two of the following: cash receipts, cash disbursements, cost accounting, journal entries, operation of a general ledger system and subsidiary accounts, posting and closing a full set of books, or preparation of a trial balance.

Tax Auditor/Entry ($3,948-$5,483)

A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or any related field; OR

24 quarter hours (16 semester hours) in accounting or finance including one class in technical writing and one class in Excel and two years of experience doing either compliance work in a tax program or professional accounting.

  • Professional accounting experience must include at least two of the following: cash receipts, cash disbursements, cost accounting, journal entries, operation of a general ledger system and subsidiary accounts, posting and closing a full set of books, or preparation of a trial balance.

The ideal candidate will possess the following desired skills and attributes:

  • Experience and high degree of proficiency in researching/aggregating large amounts of data using Microsoft Excel.

  • Ability to perform tasks with a high attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Demonstrated integrity and ethics along with responsibility and accountability in all professional and personal interactions.

  • Excellent customer service skills for both internal and external customers.

  • The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary range will reflect the additional 6.95%.
