Senior Data Engineer

Many of our products and services revolve around projecting the future of the energy system: trying to understand how the drivers of today will shape future outcomes, and how wind and solar will interact with electric vehicles, battery storage, electrolysis, and hydrogen to create the new energy system.

To do this we need to run large mathematical models (such as BID3, bid3.afry.com), and underpinning those models and analysis are large volumes of historical data.  This needs to be extracted, cleansed, stored and served to our internal and external users.

Historically this data has been stored in ad-hoc SQL databases, but with the growth in data and client needs for that data, we are building both a new Cloud-based data storage solution, and a brand-new data analytics team to both support our consulting organisation and take Big Data to our clients.

The selected candidate(s) will join AFRY India at our Noida  offices and work closely with our energy management consulting teams across the world.

This role is to lead the new Data Engineering and Data Science team within Management Consulting.  Reporting to the Head of Market Analysis, you’ll be responsible for understanding user needs, the architectural design of the system, and ensuring that data can be delivered to clients and our staff. 

We will be hiring a small, focused team around you, so you’ll need some management experience, and you’ll also be working alongside our digital division, AFRY X, who will provide technical, UX and architectural support.  But above all else we’re looking for teamwork, and a hands-on mentality to solve complex problems and be part of the development and coding.

General skills

• At least a Bachelor’s within Computer Science or comparable field and you have at least 5 years’ experience in software development. The successful applicant will combine exceptional problem solving and technical capability with a passion to deliver great solutions for our users.
• Virtually all the work we do requires team working so if you have good communication skills and the ability to work well with others within a project team and wider office environment you will fit in well.
• You will be working in a commercial environment to support a dynamic consultancy, so successful applicants will benefit from being very pro-active, good at creating and sharing innovative ideas and willing to do the effort to make them a reality to improve the business.

• Data Management

• You will be leading a new team building and revamping our data management system. So, experience in data architecture, data warehousing and data modelling techniques is very important.
• Previous experience of more senior data engineering roles where you have worked on and led teams with big data cloud platforms, especially if in the energy sector, would be helpful.
• Having the ability to deep dive into the data and understand the complex problems behind the energy sector is very valuable.

• Leadership

• You will be building and leading a small team, so experience of managing teams will be helpful. 
• Alongside this, you will need to have sufficient technical expertise to support the junior team members and help them with problem solving.

• Software development

• You will be leading a number of different data engineering initiatives and processes so knowledge of different development languages is useful, in particular proficiency in Python and data engineering libraries (eg airflow, luigi) as well as data science libraries or its equivalent in other languages like .Net Core.
• Experience in working with complex SQL or NoSQL datasets for writing complex SQL statements, data transformation, data cleaning and technical database management concepts.
• Experience of owning the design, development and delivery of data pipelines and best practice in SQL and Python. Likewise, any other experience in cutting-edge frameworks or platforms Datalakes, Snowflake, AI, NLP, NoSQL, .Net, CI/CD etc would be very useful.
