Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant will be responsible for assisting in various aspects of the monthly accounting and reporting cycles.  Reporting to the Assistant Controller, you will play a crucial role in month end closing activities, ensuring accurate financial reporting and completing general day to day accounting activities. This role will include ownership of  accounting and reporting  for Carnegie Learning’s grants and contracts, including government and foundation funded projects.

The ideal candidate is organized, highly detailed, and has excellent communication and interpersonal skills to provide exemplary customer support. The ideal candidate also enjoys a fast paced and growing environment, and has a knack for leveraging current technologies to improve processes.

What Your Day Will Look Like

  • Responsible for month end closing procedures including journal entries, account reconciliations and variance analysis
  • Perform day to day financial transactions, including verifying, classifying, posting and recording accounts receivable data
  • Review, investigate and correct errors and inconsistencies in financial entries and documents
  • Actively participate in the design, development and implementation process of improvements that create efficiencies and improves current processes.
  • Liaise with the research department to ensure accurate and timely grant reporting information.
  • Analyzing activity and ensuring accuracy of allocations of funds to appropriate funding sources
  • In collaboration with Investigators and project managers, develop, prepare, and finalize project budgets, and provide budget justification for submissions.
  • Facilitate awarded grant administration activities, including contractual oversight
  • Act as the compliance point of contact for funded projects, providing training and guidance on compliance issues and questions
  • Partners with principal investigators, and project managers to complete funding agency reports
  • Reviews and prepares financial information and reports for internal and external stakeholders, including variance analysis and forecasting
  • Establishes calendar of reporting and closeout reminders for sponsored programs, reminds principal investigators/project directors of reporting deadlines
  • Responsible for the application and management of the Company’s indirect (F&A) cost rate
  • Participates in audits and preparation for audits
  • Performs document closeout of awarded projects
  • Maintains necessary records, files, reports, databases, and resource materials pertinent to Grants Office activities
  • Performs other duties, as assigned

What Should Be In Your Backpack

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • Three years of accounting experience, working with grants from both government and private funding sources is a plus but not required
  • Ability to articulate understanding of Uniform Guidance for Federal Awards and Federal Acquisition Regulations
  • General Ledger experience
  • Knowledgeable in current technologies and adaptable to new technology resources, including understanding how to use various business application platforms, collaboration tools and basic business programs (e.g. Microsoft Office suite)
  • Salesforce and Oracle experience is a plus but not requireed
  • Ability to quickly analyze data and succinctly summarize/present to leadership.
