Machine Learning Engineer - AI team

In this position, you will join our AI team! The team is focused on building machine learning solutions that directly power exciting new product features such as turning messy product data into structured attributes, categorizing products, and removing the background of product images.

You will get to take advantage of the latest breakthroughs in machine learning, such as large language models.

The team does a mix of experimentation and implementation work, resulting in a varied workload where there is ample room for creativity.

Your challenges:

• Develop features end-to-end

• Lead and deliver projects together with our product and engineering teams

• Evaluate new open-source models for their suitability for our use cases

• Scale up our model-serving infrastructure

• Maintain our machine learning infrastructure using both internal and external tools

• Leverage our proprietary training data

Who are you?

• You are a software engineer with approximately 2 to 3 years of experience, and you have affinity with machine learning.

• You enjoy developing and improving ML features, and you can take them from prototype to production.

• You are interested in learning and applying both established and new techniques, such as neural networks, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and are not afraid of trying to apply recent theoretical breakthroughs to practical problems.

• You enjoy writing typed Python programs that leverage modern language features like e.g. data classes, generators, and decorators where it makes sense to do so.

• You like working in a team, and to take ownership of your projects.

• High engineering standards: do you like to leave your code cleaner than you found it? So do we!

Furthermore you fulfill the following requirements:

• Excellent programming skills in Python

• Solid understanding of machine learning algorithms and concepts (supervised and unsupervised learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, etc.)

• Previous experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or another machine learning framework

• Familiarity with databases and data processing libraries (e.g. Postgres, Pandas/Polars)

• Knowledge of Python libraries like FastAPI, Pydantic, asyncio, requests, SQLAlchemy

• Good working knowledge of Linux, git, and the command-line

• Committed to high engineering standards

Nice to have

• Education in a relevant field or equivalent thinking level

• Familiarity with cloud platforms and technologies (like e.g. GCP) for deploying machine learning models

• Familiar with Nix for managing dependencies

• Experience in developing distributed systems

Other requirements

• You already live in the Netherlands and can work from our Utrecht office 2 days a week.

• You have EU citizenship or you already have a valid work permit for the Netherlands.

• You are available minimum 32 hours a week
