The Manager Embedded Hardware will direct and support engineering design teams to incorporate advanced technologies that result in robust Pro AV type products for use in the Medical, Enterprise and DoD Markets.
  • Responsible for championing the BCI engineering culture which emphasizes creativity, teamwork, tenacity, empathy, critical thinking, and helping others.
  • This position reports directly to the Sr. VP of Operations and Engineering. 
This is a hands-on position.  This is not a remote or hybrid position.

Responsibilities
General:
  • Exercise independent judgment and discretion in overall project management of embedded hardware developments to include maintaining schedule on multiple projects at once.
  • Prioritize, plan and track project(s) progress. Provide weekly status reports to Sr. VP of Operations and Engineering.
  • Initiate and conduct formal progress review meetings.
  • Provide technical guidance and consultation to project team members, contractors, and vendors.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced team members.
  • Exercise considerable latitude in determining technical objectives and engineering specifications for projects.
  • Responsible for hiring, development and performance management of the embedded hardware team.
  • Must be on-site during normal business hours and be available outside normal business hours if business conditions require it.
Design & Development:
  • Manage embedded hardware team from concept ideation to transition of products to production
  • Develop software and firmware algorithms related to video delivery & recording over IP via wired and wireless methods. 
  • Lead the design and development of electronic systems from requirements definition, through schematic capture, board layout, prototyping, troubleshooting, design optimization and design for manufacturing
  • Design and develop microcontroller (C) and FPGA firmware (Verilog/VHDL) including real time scheduler, hardware specific subroutines, interrupt service routines, device drivers, power management modules and communications functions.
  • Oversee design validation and verification testing of embedded hardware and firmware systems, identifying and correcting problem areas and design deficiencies while maintaining engineering documentation of the development and optimization process
  • Ensure your technical design quality and design practices follow the applicable BCI practices and performance standards.
Peer Review & Development:
  • Oversee development of Mixed Signal Analog and high-speed Digital Electronic hardware designs including architecture development, component selection, schematic capture, and review of PCB layout as needed for embedded products
  • Lead and participate in internal hardware design reviews
  • Mentor junior colleagues and help troubleshoot problems across multiple projects across multiple platforms
  • Perform peer circuit and code reviews and provide constructive technical feedback to your team members. 
  • Develop and review technical data packages for assigned projects.
  • Prepare and contribute to technical documents such as proposals and reports
  • Interface with our internal multidisciplinary engineering team, management, and external stakeholders including customers, design engineering representatives, and contractors to ensure hardware design quality and customer satisfaction
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

People & Communication Skills:
  • Project leadership while designing products for manufacturability from start to finish on an integrated product team.
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) including generating engineering design drawings/documentation and presenting design progress during major project milestones (e.g., SRR, PDR, CDR)
Education and Experience
Required:
  • Minimum of B.S.in Electrical Engineering or related field (advanced degree preferred)
  • Significant experience (10+ years) in the design of embedded systems hardware and firmware for high reliability or mission critical systems (Medical/Military/Aerospace) with at least 3 years of management experience.
  • In depth, practical, hands-on experience designing and troubleshooting complex circuits – hardware and firmware – to the component level
  • A history of developing real time, deterministic firmware to control, monitor, and supervise embedded electronics hardware in mission critical medical, military and/or industrial systems
  • Experience in research and development to provide innovative solutions, technologies, and methodologies
  • Deep experience with FPGA programming; VHDL and/or Verilog languages
  • Experience with standard communication interfaces such as: I2C, SPI, RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, USB 2.0/3.0, Ethernet, Gigabit-Ethernet, CANbus. 
Desired experience:
  • Analog and Digital Video, Video transmission over copper and fiber (P2P and IP), Video Processing Capture and Display, Video wireless transmission.
  • Experience developing firmware and software that is compliant to medical standards for the FDA (e.g. IEC 62304 and ISO 13485).
  • Experience with testing of high reliability electronics to industry standards (e.g. MIL-STD, IEC 60601, ISO 13485).
  • Experience with standard video formats such as: HDMI, Display Port, 3G/12G SDI, DVI, composite, VGA, composite video
  • Experience developing embedded systems with SoCs with FPGA logic and Arm processors

Salary Range:
$160,000 - $200,000 annual
  • Pay may vary depending on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors.
