What you'll be doing as our Backend Rust Engineer

As our Backend Rust Engineer, you’ll spend the majority of your time coding, but you’ll also have responsibilities outside of development, for example - working with the rest of the Product Team to refine the Roadmap & digging into usage and performance data. You’ll be helping your team test products, build prototypes, and brainstorm experiments to make our product better.

All of this means we’ll be able to ship our products and features faster, at a higher quality, to really impact our users' experience. We want people who aren't afraid to take ownership of building great products, and are empowered to do their best work.

What you’ll actually be doing:

  • Working on building our backend APIs and microservices that power our range of products and internal tools
  • Helping to migrate legacy code to a new system
  • Maintaining our backend infrastructure

How we build/how we work:

If you’ve worked in a startup environment before, you’ll most likely have worked in similar ways to us. We’re a small and highly flexible team, merging product and engineering disciplines to help us make effective and fast decisions about the product.

Once an idea has been formed, we validate it with our users, write specs at a high level with stakeholders, iterate together on the spec with our QA and Data functions, and finally build something great to deploy to our highly engaged user base.

Our Tech Stack:

  • Languages: Mostly Rust, with a small amount of legacy Java & Node.js
  • Databases (Postgres, Redis, Snowflake)
  • AWS Services (SQS, SNS) + Digital Ocean (networking, databases, droplets)
  • Microservice infrastructure (Transitioning from Hashistack to Kubernetes)
  • Authentication (Firebase auth, JWT management)
  • Documentation (OpenAPI, Rustdoc)
  • CI/CD (CircleCI)
How to be an excellent fit (for the role, and a great addition to Bippit’s culture)

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience as a mid-to-senior level full stack engineer working on product-focused applications and/or experience as a hands-on technical founder. This is not a junior or early-mid-level role.
  • At least a year of prior Rust language experience - our platform is built in Rust so we do need you to have experience using it.
  • High ownership and autonomy - we want you to feel comfortable and confident in your decision making.
  • A product focused approach to building well tested and robust backends.

It’s a bonus if you have:

  • Some frontend knowledge, or interest in learning (React, React Native).
  • Experience with the Rocket framework - we’re migrating from an in-house solution based on Hyper to Rocket.
  • Experience working closely with product teams/frontend product engineers.
  • Fintech experience.
  • Data visualisation skills.
Our Interview Process
  1. People Screening Call - 30 mins - Basic experience understanding, values alignment, and answering your initial questions with Maria, Talent and People Lead
  2. Founder Call - 45 mins - Mission deep dive, values alignment, and Q&A with our founder and CEO, Sam
  3. Take Home Coding Test - We'll send all the info you need to complete this before your next call
  4. Head of Engineering Call - 60 mins - An intro and code review with Louis, our Head of Engineering
