Our Perioperative Education Specialist develops nursing education programs and products based on Adult Learning principles grounded in evidence-based practices for perioperative registered nurses (RN) and other health care professionals to promote positive patient outcomes and safe practices. They collaborate with the nursing education, nursing practice, ambulatory and marketing teams to identify and verify the learning needs/gap analysis of the perioperative nurse working in surgery and invasive procedure areas. Incorporating adult learning principles, the Perioperative Education Specialist plans, develops, implements, and evaluates AORN perioperative educational products consistent with the needs assessment/gap analysis and serves as a resource regarding education for perioperative professionals and patients. They are responsible for maintaining the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) criteria for the ANCC Provider Unit for assigned projects. The Perioperative Education Specialist incorporates evidence-based practice and lifelong learning principles into the development of educational products.

More about what you’ll get to do as our Perioperative Education Specialist:

  • Collaborates with the Director, Perioperative Education and Sr Team Lead, Perioperative Education to develop continuing nursing education for the perioperative team based on needs assessment/gap analysis, trends, and feedback from target populations.
  • Maintains current knowledge of Guidelines for Perioperative Practice and perioperative nursing practice issues. 
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends in the continuing education/professional field (such as use of spaced learning and chunking).
  • Maintains current knowledge of AORN products, website, and content.
  • Works collaboratively with learning experience designers, nursing practice, ambulatory, marketing and other appropriate departments for product development, launch, and positioning of educational products.
  • Responsible for reviewing and following ANCC criteria related to the Provider and Approval Unit.
  • Ensures that all educational products comply with ANCC accreditation requirements and meet established standards.
  • Engages in on-going assessment of the nursing practice needs for all perioperative practitioners.
  • Functions as a resource to perioperative nurses using AORN’s educational products.
  • Collaborates with other departments to develop pre-education program questions and follow-up surveys to identify impact of AORN continuing nursing education/professional development on perioperative practice.
  • Monitors feedback from customers regarding AORN products and makes appropriate adjustments to existing education/professional development programs.
  • Reviews AORN enduring products and services for appropriate revisions as assigned.
  • Collaborates with others in the design, development, and implementation of educational offerings to ensure quality.
  • Participates in the development of tool kits, videos, webinars, etc.
  • Participates in and/or conducts live and virtual educational events for AORN.      
  • Supports customer and member facing committees and activities, as assigned (e.g., staff liaison). 
  • Problem solver, innovator; brings ideas to the team for review, development, and possible implementation.
  • Ability to write for AORN journal and publications.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Must Have’s to be our Perioperative Education Specialist:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing with a Master’s degree in nursing or education.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience working in a perioperative clinical nursing environment, with at least one year in a position responsible for the delivery of clinical education.
  • Registered Nurse.
  • CNOR Certification.
  • Experience that demonstrates strong writing skills and the ability to synthesize complex information and articulate concepts and recommendations.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in nursing.
  • Experience teaching Periop 101: A Core Curriculum.
  • Experience in a fulltime perioperative educator role.
  • Experience with design, development, and implementation of multimedia education activities.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in educational theory, program development, and life-long learning for all phases of a professional career.
  • Knowledgeable about continuing nursing education accreditation processes.
  • Excellent professional writing and verbal communication skills.

  • Effective time management and project planning skills with strong organization and prioritization abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration and team building skills, and proven ability to establish rapport with a wide variety of individuals.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications and the internet.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals and groups; ability to function independently, collaboratively, and with excellent critical-thinking and decision-making skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working remotely, using a computer, telephone and Teams daily. Ability to travel as needed in support of Nursing Education Department and Association events.
