We are seeking a National Practice Leader for our Inland Marine business, a key role in our Middle Market organizational leadership.  This role combines strategic leadership, technical underwriting expertise, and profit optimization.  You will be responsible for driving growth by leading our currently profitable program, enhancing profitability and building upon program excellence.  

Location: This role is open to working in a Remote/Work-From-Home (WFH) capacity, requiring approximately 15-20% travel throughout the year. 

The successful candidate will be a strategic leader with both an executive presence and the ability to build/modify underwriting programs, in addition to technical underwriting strength in various areas of Inland Marine insurance, including but not limited to builders risk, fine arts, contractors equipment, transit, floaters, etc.

As the Underwriting Middle Market leader for Inland Marine, you will oversee strategy development and execution of underwriting, growth, and profitability at the national level for your portion of the Middle Market business. We’ll count on you to provide clear strategic direction, manage risk selection, portfolio performance, catastrophe exposure, territory performance, and relationships with agents and brokers. You'll also enforce underwriting standards and implement specialized strategies for industry segments.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drives the development of competitive business plans, including entry and expansion strategies for each industry space, and actively monitors results adjust strategies to maximize profit and growth.

  • Oversees field execution for the industry’s most complex risks and accounts. Collaborates with field leadership to develop strategic business plans and set annual plan targets that optimize product integration, cross-selling and execution strategies.

  • Maintains appropriate specialization, technical expertise, and awareness of industry trends by attending specialized trade forums and industry events.

  • Establishes and accountable for production performance objectives, underwriting standards, and processes for territory manager to achieve collective objectives.

  • Collaborates with the Middle Market underwriting office to develop industry segment guidelines for all lines of business and influences product strategy for target industry segments.

  • Develops and implements strategic long and short-range plans to drive profitable business opportunities within Commercial Lines Middle Market. Develops, sponsors, and leads key initiatives to address business strategy and profitability objectives.

  • Responsible for national operational underwriting organizational design, development and implementation.

  • Ensures the organization develops and maintains successful relationships with top commercial agents and brokers through effective stewardship with service partners.

  • Assesses risk tolerance, market appetite, and emerging risk issues to drive divisional profitability, growth, and operational efficiencies.

  • Evaluates underwriting performance based on financial analysis including rate, reserve adequacy, operational, planning and product reviews.

  • Conducts audit evaluations and oversees catastrophe management within area of responsibility and underwriting authority delegation.

  • Leads implementation and communication of policies, procedures and financial budgets to achieve business objectives.

  • Oversees associate management including performance management, engagement, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organization planning, day-to-day management, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions for direct and possibly indirect reports.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: This job reports to SVP, Middle Market. Manages a team of 6-8 territory managers.  

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies preferably in business or a related field; graduate studies preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: CPCU, ARM or other industry designations preferred.

Experience: Typically, 10 years of Middle Market and/or other related commercial lines underwriting experience. Previous people leadership experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Comprehensive knowledge and mastery of industry strategy including underwriting, pricing, operations, finance and product development. Strong underwriting, insurance industry segments and business acumen.  Demonstrated competency in strategic and organizational agility and managing a vision and purpose.  Has strong problem-solving skills and proven record of strong decision quality. Strong analytical skills and aptitude for financial evaluation of business performance.  Ability to collaborate and build strong relationships across the organization.  Can influence and drive results, deal with ambiguity, and communicate effectively at all levels in the organization.  Innovative self-starter with a proven track record of setting goals and delivering results. Extensive underwriting expertise with the ability to integrate knowledge across product lines and segments. Advanced level of technical and industry expertise. Knowledge of commercial property and casualty products, insurance operations, finance and actuarial concepts, regulatory environment, reinsurance, account management,  underwriting, producer management and product development. Required skills: courage, engaging and motivating people, communicating effectively, negotiation, focusing on service, managing and improving processes,  executing well, planning and organizing work.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range.

The national salary range for Sr Director, National Inland Marine Practice - Middle Market : $136,000.00-$267,000.00

The expected starting salary range for Sr Director, National Inland Marine Practice - Middle Market : $142,000.00 - $237,000.00
