Summary

The Transportation Manager is responsible for providing tactical oversight and strategic guidance for improving and growing carrier relationships for 3rd party transportation and for supporting the success of the company's nationwide private fleet.  The transportation manager is responsible for supporting the implementing best practices in safety, compliance, maintenance, procurement, driver recruitment and retention, along with driving improvement in overall fleet utilization and cost effectiveness.  Responsibilities include understanding how to maximize common carrier relationships to supplement the private fleet within the confinements our various operations work with and working with carriers to implement contracts conducive to our business, annual or semiannual RFP’s for working lanes, etc.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and oversee programs that lead to best in class safety, compliance, cost, and customer service within the private fleet and outsourced transportation network.
  • Develop and institutionalize systems to ensure ongoing regulatory compliance (FMSCA, DOT, etc.)
  • Generate key metrics and reports from IT Systems along with ELD and On-board camera systems that provide information on the overall fleet performance
  • Support the accurate and timely reporting of monthly scorecard metrics
  • Review invoices for accuracy to contractual terms and operational activity
  • Execute loss control and risk management strategies to achieve business objectives
  • Own the ongoing relationship with the company's strategic transportation providers
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement and engage in nationwide Best Practices
  • Open and willing to travel up to 10%

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in engineering/Transportation Management/Supply Chain or related field
  • Knowledge and experience negotiating carrier contracts
  • Knowledge and experience performing nationwide carrier RFP’s for a complex and ever changing lane network
  • Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) preferred
  • Six Sigma/Lean certification preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with Freightview platform a plus
  • Experience with CASS freight pay a plus
  • 5+ years transportation experience
  • Transportation and Private Fleet Management Best Practices
  • Knowledgeable in transportation safety regulations
  • Strong analytical, reporting, and problem-solving capability
  • Excel, Access, TMS, PowerPoint
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Displays a sense of urgency and a positive outlook
  • Strong customer focus orientation (internal)
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally
  • Experience managing safety performance and programs
  • Understanding of supply chain practices and metrics
