Description:

JOB DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Director of Open Expression Programs, the Assistant Director of Open Expression Programs focuses on preserving the core values outlined in Emory University's Respect for Open Expression policy. In carrying out duties, this position is expected to treat other students, staff, and faculty with integrity, courtesy, and respect.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as support for upholding Emory's Open Expression Policy.
  • Assists in building capacity for open expression approaches and strategies across the division of Campus Life and Emory University.
  • Conducts evaluations and assessment reports of campus partners and student organizations associated with open expression observer requests.
  • Assists with administering core functions of the department that support student organizations and programs including registration, advising, mentoring, policy interpretation and implementation, leadership development, program planning and management, problem solving, crisis intervention, mediation, and referral.
  • Facilitates outreach, education, and engagement programs for student peer educators and campus community members.
  • Facilitates training for a variety of students, staff, and faculty roles. Facilitates Open Expression Observer requests through assigning, communication, and documentation. Responsible for thorough and accurate communication and documentation of all violations of Emory's Open Expression Policy.
  • Responds to various and/or acute incidents of open expression on campus as a Campus Life response team member.
  • Assumes scheduled on-call duty responsibility at night and on weekends to ensure proper coverage at Open Expression Events as determined by the director or associate director.
  • Advocates for open expression on behalf of the campus community as articulated in the university's respect for open expression policy.
  • Assists in coordinating divisional and institutional efforts aimed at increasing understanding, repairing harm, and reducing or resolving conflict.
  • Collaborates with partners within Campus Life and across the university and center student voices in both design and implementation. Departments and offices would include but are not limited to Student Involvement, Leadership, and Transitions, Office of Parent and Family Programs, Center for Civic and Community Engagement, Office of University Events, Office of Student Conduct, Center for Emergency Preparedness and Response, Emory Policy Department, and various Emory academic college student life offices.
  • Works in partnership/relationship with Campus Life Compliance Officer, Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) process and assume responsibilities connected to open expression as an ERM risk.
  • Supports a collaborative partnership with the Chair of the Open Expression University Senate Committee.
  • Participates in regular professional development opportunities including university committees, working groups, etc.
  • Acts with integrity by preserving the confidentiality of personal information about Emory Community members obtained in the course of employment and responsible treatment of all information to which access is given (e.g. rosters, keys, student ID cards, etc.).
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience working in a college or university student residential environment, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working in student leadership development, civic engagement, advising, and/or programming. Experience facilitating training and discussions.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location.  Remote work from home options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
