Function/Duties of Position:

This position supports assays run on the Nanostring GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler system, including both clinical

and research tumor samples. The tasks for this position are as follows: 1) Prepare slides for multiplex antibody

incubations following a standard protocol. 2) Under guidance of a pathologist, select regions of interest for

collection of oligonucleotide barcodes. 3) Process the collected oligonucleotides for quantitation on the

Nanostring nCounter system. 4) Maintain laboratory supplies and manage inventory. 5) Track and manage general

sample workflow. In addition to these tasks, the position may help with routine immunostaining of cancer

specimens, other histology tasks, and tissue microarray construction.

 

This position requires skills in handling laboratory specimens (human and mouse), record keeping, laboratory

equipment maintenance and quality assurance. The ability to work with several computer systems is necessary.

An ability to identify cells and cell morphology at the light microscopic level is desirable. Experience in histology,

including sectioning and staining tissue sections, is also desirable but not essential. Molecular or cellular biology

knowledge/skills (PCR, Immunofluorescent imaging and/or cell culture) would be helpful.

 

This position requires following established protocols, communicating well and working effectively as part of a

team. The technician will interact with a variety of scientists and other staff, and is expected to keep the

laboratory in good working order, including maintaining supplies, prepare stock solutions, and keeping complete

and accurate records of all experiments. The position may allow some flexibility in work hours, including some

nights and weekends, but not work-from-home.

 

Key Resonsiblities:

  • Nanostring GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler support. Prepare and process slides of human and mouse tumor samples on the Nanostring DSP and use the Nanostring MAX nCounter system for data generation
  • Workflow Development. Assist in antibody testing and other quality control assays, as well as cell culture.
  • Maintain Laboratory. Track reagents and supplies, placing orders as needed. Track specimens through workflows.
  • Data Analysis: Provide processed data to computational biologists or biostatisticians, helping to identify technical factors in data generation and processing and supporting development of biological conclusions that drive the next generation of research and advance human health.
  • Career Development: Participate in appropriate activities that enhance general knowledge of or ability to do assigned work. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: attend classes, seminars, and other training forums; stay current in relevant literature; participate in staff meetings and other informational sessions; read vendor documentation as appropriate to position; interact with peers and other employees to receive and disseminate information.
Required Qualifications:

Education:

 

  • Completion of a 2-year accredited program in Medical Laboratory Technician training plus MLT (ASCP) within 90 days of hire or AMT certification within 90 days of hire. Depending on date of training, different continuing education requirements will apply; 
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in a chemical or biological science and two years of Laboratory Technical Assistant training/experience performing standardized laboratory tests in the specialty area(s) in which high complexity testing will be performed; Depending on date of training, different continuing education requirements will apply.

 

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Must have interest in cancer research and read relevant literature
  • Must be willing to perform all of the techniques described, with training
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Access, Word, and PowerPoint) on Window OS.
  • Ability to accurately type 60wpm
  • Must have demonstrated excellent customer service skills both on the phone and in person
  • Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications:

Education:

 

  • Certification in Histotechnology
  • Bachelor’s Degree (4yr) with major courses in biology or related field and 1-2 years of laboratory work.

 

Experience:

 

  • 1-year experience in histology, including preparation and staining microscope slides.
  • Relevant coursework in tissue pathology
  • 1-2 years of experience working in a laboratory, including handling reagents, pipetting, running assays and collecting data

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  • At least 6 months of work experience in a professional, team-oriented research setting (wet or dry lab) ·
  • Deep understanding of immunohistochemistry 
  • Advanced understanding of slide scanning and imagining software
