What We Can Achieve Together

The Protect Project Manager and Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Specialist for TNC’s LAR Protect supports program objectives by working in a complex matrix organization environment. They will be part of the Latin-America Region Protect Team and will support the strategic priorities of the 30x30 Program for LAR’s Iconic Places by developing and implementing tactics for approved plans and completing and/or overseeing day-to-day tasks. They will interpret guidelines and analyse factual information to achieve results, improve workflow, and solve problems.

The Project Manager and MEL Specialist will work collaboratively with complex, cross-functional project teams and key stakeholders to establish clear project roles, project goals, develop project plans and facilitate project implementation in a way that produces quality deliverables and project outcomes on time and within budget. As the project manager, they will critically assess project scope and objectives, ensuring all risks and dependencies are addressed in the project plan, and assemble the project team to deliver successful project results. The Project Manager and MEL Specialist will obtain go/no-go decisions at all project decision points from relevant decision makers and identify and obtain approval for project deliverables from the appropriate staff or teams. Throughout the project lifecycle, the Project Manager and MEL Specialist will monitor and measure project progress, conduct corrective action as necessary, and communicate project status information to all stakeholders.

They will utilize project management methodologies and processes and ensure all organizational and divisional standards are met. They will act as a resource to other staff and project managers to provide project management guidance, training, and expertise.

They will perform risk management, issue resolution, and conflict management, and collaboratively solve complex problems. They may advise TNC communications, marketing, and philanthropy staff on issues related to priority projects and related issues.

They will refine a MEL Plan for the Program and drive its implementation with emphasis on the outcomes and intermediate results. They will work with conservation staff and external experts to design, procure, or implement solutions to meet MEL requirements within the Program. They will lead the review, completion and update of the Program’s HUB system. The Program Manager and MEL Specialist will provide guidance and facilitation capacities for planning with a system thinking approach. They will conduct scientific research, records data to support planning efforts and adaptive management.

The location for this position is flexible within countries where The Nature Conservancy is a registered NGO and has an already established office in Latin America. This position is not eligible for relocation or immigration assistance. May involve domestic and international travel of 25% or more.

Scope And Responsibilities

  • Act independently and in supervisor’s stead, as needed; exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems;

  • Work within scope of program’s strategic goals.
  • Ensure programmatic commitments, Conservancy policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance; decisions may bind the organization financially or legally;
  • Manage project budgets and assist with budget development related to strategic projects;
  • Manage projects with several variables - set realistic deadlines, manage a timeline, and ensure accountability;
  • Provide input through project teams for the development and implementation of new initiatives or the improvement of existing programs;
  • Travel occasionally, working long and flexible hours as needed;
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain;

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of conservation and sustainable development practice or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2 years of project management experience or coordinating projects.
  • Experience using project management techniques and tools such as Microsoft Project.
  • Completed coursework or other training on project management principles;
  • Experience developing and implementing effective monitoring, evaluation, and learning for multiple projects or programs.
  • Experience generating reports and analyzing and interpreting data.
  • Experience with MEL frameworks, best practices, and tools in the environmental or sustainability field in Latin America.
  • Experience engaging with and co-developing analyses to inform management decisions.
  • Experience collecting, manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting scientific data, and preparing reports of findings.
  • Experience in managing and tracking multiple projects;
  • Experience managing project teams and working with cross-functional staff;
  • Experience managing scheduling and financial aspects of small to large projects that range from short to long term.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish
