TITLE: API Engineer

STATUS: EXEMPT REPORT TO: mgr – API GATEWAY DEPARTMENT: It – API Engineering JOB CODE: 11268

Pay scale : $107,300.00 – $130,000.00 ANNUALLY

General Description

This position is responsible for designing and developing enterprise-grade solutions on the credit union’s API Gateway (middleware) platform(s). This position must be able to work both independently and collaboratively on projects from concept to production to create API solutions that streamline delivery of integrations within the credit union. This position will work closely with the API Lead Engineer, Business System Analyst, Architect, and Infrastructure teams to deliver those solutions.

Tasks, Duties, Functions

  • Work with API Lead to deliver complex digital transformation initiatives and integrations by developing and deploying APIs on cloud (Azure) and on-prem platforms.
  • Collaborate with API platform partners (Architects, Infrastructure, Security, etc.) to deliver best-in-class solutions for the initiatives.
  • Deliver front-end API solutions that simplify, secure, and monitor the usage and function of back-end APIs using standards and best practices.
  • Work with API Lead to author security policies for handling diverse API-related scenarios such as AuthN/Z, Rate Throttling, Quotas, and Attack Vectors (e.g., DDOS)
  • Author unit tests and assist the QA department with the creation of testing scripts to automate and facilitate testing.
  • Work with Business Systems Analyst(s) to document business, functional and technical requirements for specified solutions.
  • Support the platform(s) performance and quality levels from an application-based perspective, including after-hours support for critical issues.
  • Provide guidance to external development teams for API integration strategy and to foster adoption and usage of API standards.
  • Work with leadership to create procedure and governance for the API platform(s).
  • Document changes to systems in accordance with change management policies.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of state and federal laws and regulations related to credit union compliance including bank secrecy and anti-money laundering laws appropriate to the position.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry best practices, security standards, and current technologies appropriate to the solutions being delivered.
  • Perform other jobs as assigned.

PHYSICAL SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXERTION UTILIZED IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THESE TASKS:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills required to interact with credit union staff, management, vendors, and members.
  • Must possess sufficient manual dexterity to skillfully operate an on-line computer terminal and other standard office equipment, such as financial calculators, personal computer, facsimile machine, and telephone.

  • INTERNAL: All levels of staff and management.
  • EXTERNAL: Vendors, members, sales personnel, and peers at other financial institutions

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION : Bachelor's degree in Technology, or related field of study. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • EXPERIENCE:
  • 2+ years of Industry experience building Web applications using frameworks like Springboot or SpringMVC or ASP.NET MVC or Node.js and languages like Java, .NET and JavaScript or Typescript. Experience within the Microsoft ecosystem preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in building RESTful Web Services using Spring, JAX-RS, ASP.NET MVC, or Node.js.
  • 1+ years of experience working with API management functions (designing, realizing, publishing, versioning, securing, traffic management, monitoring and management, analytics etc.)
  • 1+ years of experience working on industry standard API gateways such as Azure API, AWS API, or Apigee, including authoring resource policies using JSON or XML for different security needs.
  • 2+ years of experience in building enterprise applications in cloud environments (Azure preferred)
  • 1+ years of experience in CI/CD technologies such as Azure DevOps, GitHub, Maven, Jenkins, Nexus, or Sona (Azure DevOps preferred).
  • Minimum three years of experience managing production systems in an enterprise environment
  • Basic technical understanding of interconnected delivery channels, such as online/mobile banking, middleware, data, and core host systems, etc.
  • KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of security concepts as they apply to APIs and their associated technologies using modern web protocols such as OIDC and OAuth.
  • Experience building 12-factor application for cloud desired.
  • Knowledge of source control (Git) and the related workflows associated with source control is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in troubleshooting complex systems.
  • Solid analytical, critical, and creative problem-solving skills with a deep understanding of electronic delivery channels and how to utilize them to meet business goals is required.
  • Proven success working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities while managing tactical and strategic deliverables, and ability to concurrently manage multiple deliverables at once.
  • Excellent oral communication, presentation, and writing skills to interact with credit union vendors, staff, and management.
  • Highly motivated strategic thinker with strong technical background.
  • Ability to analyze product performance and recommend improvements.
  • Results-oriented with a proven ability to influence cross-functional teams that do not directly report to you.
  • Strong PC skills, including proficiency using Excel required.
  • Knowledge of existing credit union products, services, and overall operational guidelines desired.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged sitting throughout the workday with occasional mobility required.
  • Corrected vision within the normal range.
  • Hearing within normal range. A device to enhance hearing will be provided if needed.
  • Must be able to work under tight deadlines; may require unusually long work hours to accomplish tasks.
  • Prolonged operation of a personal computer, which includes typing, operating a mouse and reading information on the monitor.
  • May be able to diagnose remotely and occasionally may need to travel to site to correct problem either by car or public conveyance.
  • Minimal travel throughout the United States to increase knowledge and skills in relevant disciplines by car or public conveyance.
  • Moderate travel locally by car or public conveyance to resolve issues and attend meetings.
