About the Role

As our Business Development Director, you will focus on developing Repairs and Maintenance, Asset Management and Capital/Planned works opportunities in the social housing sector, you will provide leadership and direction to the commercial team on strategic opportunities, bidding activity, including resourcing, and supporting the operational teams during mobilisation to maximise profitability, sustainable growth, and tender risk management.

Working with senior managers to deliver high quality, operational and innovative solutions, client engagement and individual bid strategies that support retention of key contracts and growth objectives through innovative client solutions. Enhancing our offer to the market and embracing new technologies and service offerings, including the use of contractors as required.

  • Create, develop, and implement our national business development strategy that embraces core services, pipeline management and resource management to develop and implement innovative client solutions to support growth that aligns to our business retention and growth strategic plans.

  • Ensure tender methodology is effectively communicated nationally to operational/mobilisation teams and that our established policies, processes, and procedures are adopted and followed and are embedded in the Group as well as in pre-bid adjudications.

  • Take a strategic approach in the way the Group tenders projects, continuously analyse outturn costs and ensure trends/changes are captured within new tenders, learning from experience to build an intelligent qualitative repository.

  • To represent Mears positively in competitive dialogue environments to help secure term R&M, Asset Management and Capital/Planned works contracts.

  • To meet regularly with Clients and Consultants at senior levels to positively influence tender outcomes, to raise any deviance's between their requirements and tender assumptions and present and negotiate tender and mobilisation phases and to better understand how Mears is perceived in the market.

  • Work closely within the Managing Directors and their teams to review future tender opportunities and strategy and to support mobilisation, challenge client’s expectations during mobilisation and improve profitability where possible.

  • To report back to the board on all commercial, financial and risk considerations of the bids/contracts. Providing statistics on a monthly basis to illustrate performance, pipeline, innovation development and projected wins. Working with the Board in choosing which opportunities to progress, in line with the Sales Strategy, will be essential to ensure success.  The ability to challenge and ‘push back’ will also be required to ensure that we do not overload the team and focus on strategic and ‘winnable’ opportunities.

  • Manage and develop mitigation strategies for TUPE (where applicable) and ensure this is conveyed to operational teams prior to bid sign off.

  • To regularly monitor businesses compliance with Mears Group policies and procedures, and contractual obligations with clients.  Identify and implement mitigating actions and put in place additional processes to ensure compliance where required.

  • Act as an ambassador for the Group, engaging with stakeholders at the highest level, including presenting keynote speeches at industry conferences and round table events, awards, and other public events to maximise visibility to support the brand.

Essential Criteria

  • Proved experience in a business development capacity, delivering National sales strategies, ideally within the social housing repairs and maintenance sector.

  • Experience of leading, preparing and managing bids, in the value range of £3.5 Million to £10+Million per annum.

  • Experience of producing winning proposals that score top marks for quality, whilst identifying and justifying which opportunities have financial risks for the business to manage client and internal expectations.

  • The proven ability to keep many initiatives live at one time is essential.

  • Experience of building and managing internal and external relationships to ensure fluid communication is maintained to avoid unnecessary delays.

  • Experience of creating and delivering reporting/statistics monthly to board level.

  • Experience of arranging and attending client meetings based upon an agreed strategy.

  • Knowledge and experience of TUPE management within bids.

  • People management and leadership experience, including inspiring and motivating team members.

  • Current knowledge of a recognised bid management process and proven skills in estimating/financial solutions ideally for social housing bids.

  • Ability to travel Nationally as required, with occasional overnight stays.

  • Ideally have experience of working both in the public and private sectors
