Data Scientist

Come join a team of excited and engaged data scientists working across a wide array of industries and domains, including weather, agriculture, refined fuels, marine applications, and transportation infrastructure!  DTN is currently looking for a data scientist to work in the areas of agriculture and weather risks, using weather forecasts, satellite imagery and related datasets. 

What you will be responsible for:  

• Collaborate with domain experts to understand requirements and translate them into actionable data science tasks 

• Conduct exploratory data analysis to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies in relevant datasets, including weather and Earth-observing satellite data, data from weather and agricultural modeling systems, and data from governmental sources such as the USDA, NOAA and NASA 

• Identify and implement novel ways of integrating varied informational resources to fill in critical gaps in the data that are available for solving a particular problem 

• Develop and implement innovative machine learning models for classification, localization, prediction, and change detection 

• Develop data visualization tools and dashboards to communicate findings and insights to stakeholders 

• Apply satellite data in combination with other data resources and models to extract meaningful insights related to weather impacts and agricultural patterns 

• Conduct spatiotemporal analyses and build models to identify and forecast weather-related risks such as droughts, floods, and storms, and their impact on agriculture and safety 

• Stay updated with the latest advancements in satellite imagery analysis, machine learning, and data science techniques 

What you will bring to the role:  

• Demonstrated experience in quantitative and scientific analysis 

• Experience with data science tools and quantitative analysis programming languages, such as Python (Pandas, Numpy) and JupyterLab 

• Excellent problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability for analytical thinking 

• Able to work within cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform 

• Proficiency with data analysis techniques for preprocessing, classification, change detection (etc.) in data from varied sources such as satellites, weather networks, models, and instrumented machinery, preferred 

• Experience working with weather or climate data, such as meteorological models and remotely-sensed datasets, preferred

The targeted hiring base pay range for this position is between $78,750 and $105,000. DTN is a pay for performance organization, which means there is the opportunity to advance your compensation with performance over time. The actual base pay offered for this position will be dependent upon many factors, including but not limited to: prior work experience, training/education, transferable skills, business needs, internal equity and applicable laws. The targeted hiring base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for market competitive variable pay and benefits.
