Job Description:

Providing for loved ones, planning rewarding retirements, saving enough for whatever lies ahead – our policyholders count on us to be there when it matters most. It’s a big ask, but it’s one that we have the power to deliver when we work together. We collaborate and innovate – pushing one another to transform not just Pacific Life, but the entire industry for the better. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do. Pacific Life is more than a job, it’s a career with purpose. It’s a career where you have the support, balance, and resources to make a positive impact on the future – including your own.

We’re actively seeking a talented Underwriting Consultant to join our Underwriting team. This position can be at one of our office locations or 100% remote.

As Underwriting Consultant, you’ll play a key role in Pacific Life’s growth and long-term success by evaluating insurance applicants by correlating all aspects of risk to determine whether to accept, modify, or decline applications. While joining the Consumer Markets Division (CMD), you’ll focus on mortality by evaluating risk of death, which includes history, degree of medical maintenance, treatment, and flags of potential future risk.

How you’ll help move us forward:

  • Serve as a critical part to the placement of Life Insurance coverage and can directly impact our position in the marketplace and relationship with distribution partners

  • Focus on mortality by evaluating risk of death, which includes history, degree of medical maintenance, treatment, and flags of potential future risk

  • Review of upfront underwriting data/tools

  • Handling additional underwriting requirements by determining value, ordering, and reviewing to perform risk selection

  • Finalizing cases

  • Data enter medical history and use system workbenches to process and decision cases

  • Demonstrate dependability, organization, and sound judgment by adhering to schedules and meeting all productivity, quality, and performance standards

The experience you bring:

  • 3+ years of underwriting experience with proven proficiency in all underwriting processes and philosophies to include strong cardiac background and older age underwriting; ability to handle advanced decision level authorities without a co-signature

  • Completion of LOMA 280/281 and 290/291; actively working toward AALU and FLMI; Professional Designations: AALU/FALU and FLMI preferred

  • Strong PC and typing skills to include general Microsoft skills required to data enter and process information; extremely comfortable with web-based underwriting analysis tools and imaging systems

  • Ability to work remotely

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with ability to build rapport and gain acceptance at all levels internally and externally while exercising diplomacy and resourcefulness

  • Critical thinking skills and attention to detail with ability to quickly identify information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events

  • Ability to interpret meaning of information for others; translating or explaining what information means and how it can be used

  • Ability to develop specific goals, plan, and prioritize work; EKG and Cardiac test interpretation preferred
