Job Description

We offer a merit-based work-from-home program based on job responsibilities. After initial training in-person, this specific role could have the flexibility to work from home up to 3 days per week.

Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated insurance carrier, is seeking a motivated individual to join our Underwriting department as a Compliance Specialist. The position requires the person to:

  • Review, on an ongoing basis, State/Federal statutes, regulations and bulletins that impact compliance requirements.
  • Evaluate current policies, procedures and products to ensure compliance with applicable laws. Make recommendations for change where appropriate.
  • Provide accurate and relevant information that will support decisions and determinations regarding all compliance related issues.
  • Assess risk potential of current procedures and recommend any necessary procedural changes to minimize loss exposure.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategies to ensure compliance with policies and procedures, and to avoid future compliance problems.
  • Ensure that any change in policy or procedure is clearly communicated, through both written and verbal means, to impacted departments/vendors. Follow up to ensure new procedures are understood and implemented.
  • Assist external compliance examiners during a market conduct examination or audit, making available the information that is necessary to complete the examinations.
  • Assist in the revision and/or design of forms, products and procedures to ensure compliance with all State and Federal laws and company standards.
  • Assist in the development of compliance training programs.
  • Assist team members with questions related to compliance and proper procedures.
  • Review, on an ongoing basis, implementation of policies and procedures in accordance with applicable laws.
  • File forms, surveys, certifications and annual filings that may be due with various state insurance departments and other organizations, as applicable.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Ability to interpret documents such as instructions and policies and procedure manuals and carry tasks to completion in an organized manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret State and Federal statutes, regulations, bulletins, other legislative correspondence, insurance policies and company procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both in oral and written forms.
  • Possess good problem resolution and organization skills.
  • Ability to make decisions and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively with associates at all levels.
  • Must be able to operate a personal computer and have skills in Company documentation software, proficiency in spreadsheets, database applications and document management software.
  • Must have proficiency with research software as well as internet research.
  • The ability to train others upon the request of the supervisor.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional business image.
  • One to four years of experience in a compliance environment preferred.
