Your missions

Newsweek is the global media organization that has earned audience time and trust for more than 90 years. Newsweek reaches 100 million people each month with thought-provoking news, opinion, images, graphics, and video delivered across a dozen print and digital platforms. Headquartered in New York City, Newsweek also publishes international editions in EMEA and Asia.

Newsweek is seeking a full-time Science Reporter to join our London team.

The Science Reporter will be able to source, pitch and write news and feature articles based around current affairs, health, nature, space and trending topics—connecting all with an interesting take on popular science. Additionally, they should understand psychology and be able to communicate complex concepts in an accessible and engaging manner.

The Science Reporter will have a strong understanding of digital journalism and the needs of a fast-paced newsroom. They will be well-organized, confident, and experienced in contacting experts for comment on their stories.

The Science Reporter should be able to use social media and other platforms to identify trending topics and conceive original articles. They will conduct interviews and forward-plan for events. They will craft engaging stories for an American audience.

Reporters with an interest/experience in certain areas should make this clear in their cover letter. While particular areas of interest are welcomed, the successful candidate will be versatile and confident writing across a range of topics. The candidate does not need scientific qualifications, but an eye for scientific detail is an advantage.

The candidate will be responsible for ensuring high-quality coverage that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism.

Place of Work: Our office is based in London but you will have the ability to work from home anywhere in the UK.

Key responsibilities:

  • Write several news stories per day.
  • Pitch, research and write original stories and features.
  • Check facts and sources and ensure content is of the highest possible standard.
  • Contact experts for comment.
  • Work with editors to ensure copy meets Newsweek’s house style and quality standards.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business.

 Requirements:

  • Detailed knowledge of key topics, such as nature, space, health and Earth sciences. An interest in U.S. politics is beneficial.
  • Experience in a reporting role covering scientific topics for a reputable organization.
  • Capable of working to tight deadlines.

Newsweek is an equal opportunity employer. We seek employees of diverse backgrounds and are committed to providing an inclusive, equitable and respectful workplace.
