Position Details: Fixed Term until March 31, 2025, Part-Time (14 hours/week), New Position
Salary Range: Hourly range at $24.45 - $30.50, based on a 14-hour work week. 
Location: Remote within the Basin region
Closing Deadline: June 28, 2024 (11:59PM EDT)

Due to funding requirements, the selected candidates will need to be a permanent resident of the Basin, not a current student and legally entitled to work in Canada. Preference will be given to candidates who are members of  ʔaam, or another Ktunaxa First Nation Member.

Through this employment opportunity, DUC is seeking to partner with an ʔaq̓amnik to recognize the indigenous right to revitalize, use, develop and transmit to future generations their histories, languages, oral traditions, philosophies, writing systems and literatures, and to designate and retain Ktunaxanames for communities, places and persons in a way that is meaningful to ʔaq̓amnik.

What You Will Do

You will be involved in a large, partnership-led wetland restoration project at Bummers Flats, a large floodplain directly across the Kootenay River from ʔaq̓am community. The project, led by DUC, ʔaq̓am, The Nature Trust of British Columbia, The Province of BC, and The BC Wildlife Federation, involves restoring natural hydrologic and ecological functions of floodplain. Key objectives of the project include ʔaq̓amnik incorporation of Ktunaxa language, values, and stewardship at the Bummers Flats location. This position will work directly with the project team and ʔaq̓am community to develop communication and education material to ensure that Ktunaxa place names, values and stories are meaningfully included in the project.  

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Working with ʔaq̓am Language Speakers and Knowledge Holders committee to implement changes to Language and communications about Bummers Flats, the large wetland and floodplain directly adjacent to ʔaq̓am. 
  •  Updating existing names and replacing signage at the restoration project such that Ktunaxa perspective, values, and language are highlighted in communications about the restoration project.
  •  Attending meetings and communicating about the project. This may include participation in discussions with the project team and/or organizing and presenting at in-person events if needed.
  •  Working with both ʔaq̓am and the project team to ensure that language, culture and other traditional social values of ʔaq̓am are included in the restoration project. 

Requirements

  • Training or experience in Ktunaxa language and culture and/or strong desire to gain experience Ktunaxa language and culture. 
  • High degree of knowledge and experience working with ʔaq̓amnik particularly in areas of language and culture.
  • Educational equivalent to completion of college diploma or a relevant combination of education and experience will also be considered. 
  • Strong communications skills, both verbally and in writing, including communications in meetings
  • Basic knowledge of Ktunaxa language would be an asset.
  • Comfortable working as part of a team or independently.
