Department Overview
The OHSU Department of Family Medicine (DFM) seeks an open-rank faculty member to join our thriving research group. This faculty member would have strong quantitative methodological skills (e.g., biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology) and function as a methodologist for our research group. The faculty member would also develop their own portfolio of research. We are interested in candidates in all research areas; potential areas of focus include health services research, policy evaluation, epidemiological analyses, cost-effectiveness analyses, systems, macro- or upstream concepts in health (such as health-related social needs, social determinants of health, structural factors of equity).
Family Medicine research covers a range of topics in health services, health policy, health equity, comparative effectiveness, chronic disease (cancer, etc.) prevention, primary care transformation, and educational research. Our research focuses on understanding and transforming health care through innovation. The research section is highly collaborative and uses a team science model, where research studies are conducted by multidisciplinary teams that is often inclusive of primary care clinical team members working on the frontlines. This ensures that our research both informs and is informed by primary care practice. Our studies use advanced quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods.
Located in Portland, Oregon, the OHSU Department of Family Medicine is ranked #1 among Family Medicine departments by US News and World Report for the last three consecutive years. This ranking recognizes our outstanding clinical, education and research enterprise. Our faculty are internationally recognized for mixed methods research and four of 15 faculty are elected to the National Academy of Medicine.
Our Family Medicine research section is comprised of 15 research faculty and 41 staff. Our team benefits from having robust grants/contracts and administrative support in our department. This team supports our faculty in pre- and post-award grant activities. In FY20, we had over $14 million in federal (NIH, AHRQ, CDC, etc.) and foundation (American Cancer Society, etc.) research funding. We are 4th in the United States in NIH funding for departments of Family Medicine, as ranked by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research.

Function/Duties of Position
This faculty member will be an integral part of the research in the department. This will include:
- Serving as PhD-level quantitative lead on study teams in collaboration with DFM investigators on research projects, including contributing to and leading efforts in grant development and writing, study design, analysis, and publication of results
- Developing or expanding one’s own area(s) of methodological or content area expertise, and obtaining local or national funding for their research
- Mentoring master-level biostatistician team members, as well as faculty, residents, and students
- Contributing to development of resources for skill-building within DFM faculty and Research Associate groups
- Presenting research findings at scientific conferences
- Developing management and interpersonal skills to lead and sustain diverse academic teams
- While teaching is not a requirement, it is encouraged; there are opportunities to teach at OHSU, in the MPH/MS program and in the department
Required Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Quantitative Epidemiology (or related field)
- Strong record of research and peer-reviewed publication history, commensurate with rank
- Outstanding communication skills, including proven ability and joy in communicating complex ideas and concepts (both orally and in writing) to scientific and non-scientific audiences
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor
- Extensive experience collaborating with other investigators, commensurate with rank
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in research activities
- Demonstrated experience with and enthusiasm for collaborative research, particularly with mixed-methods teams
- Ability to maintain a safe working and learning environment
- Ability to achieve project goals on time and within budget
- Expertise with statistical software (e.g., R, Stata, SAS)
- Expertise applying data science/analytic methods in one or more dataset types including electronic health records, administrative claims, survey, or qualitative coded data

- Position is full-time, 12-month, 1.0 FTE, and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
