California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. (CRLA) is a nonprofit legal services program founded in 1966 to assist low-income individuals in rural communities. Over 50 years later, CRLA is one of the largest legal aid organizations in California, using its 17 field offices and an annual budget of over $25 million to provide tens of thousands of low-income Californians with free legal assistance, community education, and outreach programs. Grants Manager

The Grants Manager plays a key role in the Resource Development Department’s goal to secure an annual budget of over $24.5 million. Reporting to the Director of Grants and Contracts, this position manages a portfolio of primarily private and corporate institutional funders, maintaining relationships with program officers, producing quality proposals and reports, and collaborating with staff to ensure grant deliverables are achieved and compliance is maintained. We seek a person who is highly organized, a team player, a great communicator, and passionate about bringing social justice to exploited communities.

This is the perfect position for someone who:

  • Brings experience as the lead writer on successful grant proposals of $100,000 and above
  • Enjoys managing multiple projects under deadlines and facilitating cross-departmental teams to ensure deliverables are met 
  • Can “spin straw into gold” by using data to tell compelling impact stories

Essential Responsibilities

  • Prepare compelling letters of inquiry and grant proposals, primarily to private foundations including those with Donor Advised Funds, and corporations
  • Maintain strong and positive relationships with funders through timely, well-written progress and annual grant reports as well as personal cultivation.
  • Collaborate in the maintenance of the tracking system for grants, including proposal submissions, stewardship, grant profile creation and maintenance, and reporting deadlines.
  • Manage the grant proposal and reporting process by ensuring that all the information needed for the grant is gathered in a timely fashion. This includes communicating with staff about grant goals, outcomes, and deliverables that relate to their work and ensuring that the information (including data, budgets, etc.) needed is collected. 
  • Collaborate with the Finance Department to develop budgets. Collaborate with the Finance Department and the Director of Grants and Contracts to track grant revenue and spending and ensure accurate reconciliations for grant and contract-supported programs.
  • Coordinate with the Individual Giving team on identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of private funders including foundations and corporations.
  • Use the DonorPerfect and LegalServer databases to track grants and progress with prospects and funders through the identification, research, cultivation, solicitation, and continued stewardship stages.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • 3+ years of grant fundraising from private foundations and/or corporations, with a track record of success in securing grants of $100,000 and above
  • Experience working with foundation and corporate funders
  • Meticulous attention to detail, exemplary organizational skills, and demonstrated success in managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent writing, editing, grammar, and proofreading skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to excel in independent and team-based work and to collaborate effectively with diverse constituencies
  • Ability to occasionally work unconventional hours and travel for fundraising activities
  • Ability to excel as part of a geographically dispersed remote team, including reporting to a supervisor in another location

Preferred Education and Experiences

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent
  • Knowledge of California institutional funder landscape
  • Demonstrated knowledge and comprehension of Donor Advised Funds
  • Experience fundraising for a legal aid or human services organization

Compensation & Benefits:

We offer a diverse, family-friendly environment and compensation based on competitive public interest salaries. The pay range for this position is $66k-$82k per year. Generous benefits package that includes 100% employer-covered medical, dental, vision, life, and short & long-term disability insurance for employees and up to 50% for dependent coverage. A 401K retirement plan with CRLA contribution effective immediately. Generous paid leave policy, which includes 15 days of sick leave, 15 holidays each year, and vacation (accrue 15 days for the first year of service and 20 days after one year of service at CRLA).
