Telecommunications GIS / Design Technician

Overview

Under the direction of the OSP Design/GIS Manager and in conjunction with the OSP Design/GIS team, the OSP Design/GIS Technician is responsible for Fiber to the X (FTTX) design including outside plant design and low level design and for creating and maintaining GIS data sets related to fiber to the home (FTTH) design projects.  Incumbent will successfully meet or exceed business unit goals while maintaining quality standards and following company and business unit directives and practices. This position is 100% remote.

Essential Functions

• Responsibilities will include general project production including low level design, drafting, and GIS input.
• Create splice matrix and fiber assignments.
• General understanding of OSP design, installation, and maintenance activities.
• Ability to understand the necessary field information regarding aerial, buried, or underground OSP telecommunications cables and associated facilities in the design of work orders to place new network, utility poles, hand holes, terminals, cabinets, etc., or to modify the existing network.
• Working knowledge of telecommunications network structure; understanding of communications engineering and related systems.
• Effectively place fiber and complete fiber assignments based on design methods.
• Adhere to internal and external design practices, standards, policies, and procedures. 
• Raise project concerns or risks to management, as necessary.
• Create GIS base maps to include plat information, lot numbers, streets and utility easements.
• Create and maintain GIS data sets.
• Create and maintain web maps and web applications.
• Create detailed construction packages utilizing ArcGIS Pro.
• Assist GIS Specialists and Systems Engineers with custom client GIS mapping requests.
• General understanding of OSP design, installation and maintenance activities.
• Working knowledge of telecommunications network structure; understanding of communications engineering and related systems.
• Adhere to internal and external GIS practices, standards, policies and procedures. 
• Raise project concerns or risks to management, as necessary.
• Attend virtual meetings and trainings as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management and based on the needs of the business.

Education and Experience Requirements

• High School diploma required.
• Associates Degree in engineering or related field preferred.
• Minimum of 6 months-1 year related work experience with OSP Fiber Design preferred.

• General knowledge of FTTx and the ability to think creatively to solve problems.
• General knowledge of OSP design of fiber optic facilities, including aerial, underground, and buried applications.
• Working knowledge of ESRI products, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, 3GIS and Microsoft Excel preferred.
• Ability to contribute and work well with a team.

Preferred:

• Experience with Esri software suites.
• Familiarity with coding software such as Python or Model Builder.
• General knowledge of FTTx design.
• General knowledge in OSP design of fiber optic facilities, including aerial, underground, and buried applications.
