The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Guideline Advisor. The successful candidate will be considered a joint employee of the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology (ACC).  Location of the selected candidate is flexible provided location allows for effective and cost-efficient travel.

 

This Guideline Advisor is responsible for providing project management support to expert writing committee members during the development and production of Clinical Practice Guideline documents. You will become an expert in American Heart Association/ACC guidelines methodology, procedures, and style. You will also be responsible for overseeing manuscript preparation for organizational approval and final publication in scientific journals. 

 

Day to day activities include planning, scheduling, materials preparation and facilitation of weekly teleconference committee meetings over the 14-month development process, hands-on document draft compilation, editing, reference linking, and version control. Because our volunteers are active clinicians in many locations, some meetings may occur before or after usual business hours. Ongoing open communications with volunteers and staff is key to smooth workflow and early resolution of any issues.

Responsibilities:
  • Act as primary liaison and project manager for assigned guideline writing committee(s) including planning, scheduling, and facilitating committee agendas and meetings.  Identify and develop relationships with expert volunteers for writing committee members leading to real-time draft development, virtual and/or face to face meetings, and consensus conferences. Build collaborative and productive ongoing relationships with expert clinical and scientific volunteer writing committee members during draft development as well as kickoff and consensus conferences.
  • Support writing committee literature review and preparation of study-based evidence tables and clinical practice recommendations including supporting text and references. Coordinate with staff evidence review specialists to facilitate statistical data analysis as the need arises.
  • Integrate written materials drafted by multiple authors into a single document using Microsoft Word and rigorously edit under the direction of the writing committee chairs. Assist guideline writing committee members with creation of figures (ultimately produced by a graphic designer for publication) and tables as needed.
  • Prepare and manage schedules and track progress of guideline writing committees to ensure that the project is running on schedule and deadlines are met.
  • Proof-read final, board-approved documents for accuracy, format, and style; and prepare files for delivery to journal publishers.
  • Participate in professional meetings such as the American College of Cardiology Scientific Sessions (May), American Heart Association Scientific Sessions (November) and guideline writing group committee meetings (kick-off meetings and consensus conferences) throughout the year, as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field of study.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in medical or health research writing or editing.
  • Prior Heath Care content or Project Management experience.
  • A passion for helping bring the best in evidence-based healthcare to a wide population.
  • Excellent communications, customer service, and volunteer leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple, sophisticated projects in varying stages of development.
  • Knowledge of systematic evidence review, development of evidence tables, and clinical research. 
  • Excellent prioritization and time management skills as well as the ability to work well under strict deadlines and high production requirements.
  • Outstanding writing, proofreading/editing, spelling, and grammar skills as well as attention to detail and accuracy in all written communications.
  • Advanced MS Word skills (e.g., solid understanding of styles, section breaks, headers/footers, tables, track changes). Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe.
  • Must be able to travel overnight approx. 15% of the time. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Public Health, Epidemiology or related Health or Medical Research.
  • Experience with medical writing, proofreading, and editing.
  • Experience in association or similar environment with customer service orientation and committee management.
  • Familiarity with reference management software (Endnote) and Guideline Development Software (Indico).
