ABOUT YMCA METROPOLITAN LOS ANGELES

The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles (the Y) is seeking a cause-driven youth development professional to lead, manage, and oversee our School-Age Out-of-School Time department, including before & after school, day camp, and expanded learning program operations. The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles (the Y) currently operates both licensed and licensed-exempt before and after school and out-of-school time expanded learning programs at fifty (50) elementary schools during the school year and day camp programs at around eighty (80) elementary school and Y branch sites during the school breaks, throughout all of Los Angeles County.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles is seeking a dynamic leader who will, with the support of a senior program leadership team, increase the Y's impact and footprint in the before and after school and expanded learning space, through strategic leadership and targeted partnerships. In alignment with the Y's Center for Community Well-Being strategy framework, the Vice President of Youth Development will be instrumental in the execution of the Y's cradle-to-community well-being youth development strategy, which aims to create a pathway for success for every child in Los Angeles, through programs, services, initiatives, and advocacy.

The total annual operating budget for this department is 18M+. This position reports to and is supported by the Chief Youth Development Program Officer. The Y offers career growth opportunities and a generous benefits package. This position will supervise four direct reports: three Operations Executive Directors, and one Senior Program Director. In addition, this position is supported by a shared Director of Youth Development Services and Coordinator of Youth Development Services. This team supervises an additional 300+ youth development directors, coordinators, and direct-service staff (up to around 550 during the summer). In addition, this position will be a contributing member of the Y's youth development strategy leadership team, consisting of executive staff who oversee early learning, preschool, teens, youth sports, and other youth-focused programs at the Y.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Attend staff meetings and training as required.

Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management.

Demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Fairness) as well as the YMCA Core Values of Caring, Respect, Honesty, and Responsibility, in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers, and fellow staff.

Demonstrate competencies in and willingness to develop in the Cause Driven Leadership areas of mission advancement, collaboration, operational effectiveness, and personal growth.

Strategic Operations

  • Strategically lead the YMCA's Youth Development department; including before and after school, expanding learning out-of-school time and day camp programs. Innovate and ideate to ensure sustainability across all programs.
  • Lead, develop, and implement strategies to ensure programs achieve enrollment goals identified in Y's annual operating plan.
  • Effectively communicate program details to necessary departments, oversee quality control and curriculum development for youth development programs, and lead initiatives to create nurturing, child-centered environments with volunteer and family involvement.
  • Oversee the distribution of ongoing program member evaluations and surveys to ensure that high levels of quality in programs are maintained at all times; ensure outcomes align with the community's needs and the Y's strategic plan.
  • Build strong relationships with schools and the community, evaluate program quality and needs, and collaborate with school administrations, districts, board members, and community organizations to advance the Y's mission and maximize its impact on youth development

Staff Leadership

  • Work with the team to ensure they regularly visit program sites and complete evaluations. Review evaluation and ensure that plans of correction of developed, if needed.
  •  Develop and support a strategy around staff recruitment and hiring. Provide direct supervision to department staff, assuring that all staff are qualified, certified, and meeting minimum performance standards for their position.
  • Work with your team to ensure that monthly department cluster meetings and staff training are planned and executed. Design, co-create, or partner with a third party to facilitate professional development opportunities, and execute ongoing training for staff and volunteers through various meetings, courses, workshops, and regional events, including youth development summits and conferences.

Community Engagement

  • Create opportunities (events, initiatives, activities) for the community to engage in the Y.
  • Identify program volunteer positions and assist with identifying, recruiting, and tracking program volunteers.
  • Chair the YMCA’s annual county-wide Healthy Kids Day event, lead the committee, and work closely with the venue, local branch leadership, community leaders, and partners to execute a successful event.
  • Support youth development events and initiatives as a contributing member of the team, such as the Y’s Girls Empowerment Day, Young Men’s Empowerment Day, and other large-scale events. 

Operations & Compliance

  • Create and maintain systems to ensure that state-licensed before and after-school program sites are always in compliance with licensing.
  • Lead YMCA branches in maintaining or obtaining American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation. Work as a liaison between the Y and ACA.
  • Maintain a commitment to safety through regularly scheduled and documented on-site safety inspections. Ensure that standards for safety and risk management are met.
  • Explore, develop, and strategize other ways for the organization to provide before and after-school programs and services outside of the licensed childcare model.
  • Review high-level incident reports, evaluate, and take appropriate action. Maintain a commitment to safety through regularly scheduled and documented on-site safety inspections.
  • Ensure current records are maintained for all staff that require certifications and keep copies on file. Ensure that all job descriptions and performance standards are accurate, current, and on file for all employees.
  • Ensure all exempt program sites follow The Y's standards and use recruitment strategies to ensure all licensed facilities have a fully qualified director.

Fiscal Management 

  • Develop and manage annual operating budgets for all programs, achieve financial goals, complete monthly forecasting, and monitor budgets with variance analysis and expense control.
  • Work closely with the Y's finance team to ensure that 3rd party funding is managed appropriately. Prepare and submit reports and documentation as required.
  • Oversee department spending and obtain authorizations accordingly.
  • Develop and support year-round fundraising programs, including donor relations, grant opportunities, and special event sponsorships. Maintain good rapport with current and future funders, including updates throughout the year, program tours, etc. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Child & Adolescent Development, Recreation, or a related field or equivalent in academic preparation and/or experience. Full knowledge of and experience with California Title 22 licensing compliance and regulation (or comparable compliance and regulation knowledge/experience from another U.S. state). Knowledge of and experience with acceptable child care and day camp practices.
  • Related Experience: Experience managing multiple sites and programs. Minimum of four (4) years of experience managing licensed childcare and before and after school school programs, including experience supervising supervisors and staff. It is strongly preferred that the candidate have working experience as a Center Director in a Licensed Child Care facility. Knowledge and experience with the American Camp Association accreditation process is preferred, but not required.
  • Licenses & Certification: YMCA Multi-Team Leader Certification preferred. California EMSA approved 16-Hour Infant-Child-Adult CPR, First Aid, AED, Lead Poisoning Prevention, and Preventative Health and Safety certifications or are willing to certify within 60 days of hire (provided by the YMCA).
  • Immunizations & Physical: Proof of vaccination for TDAP (Whooping Cough/Pertussis) and MMR (Measles). Completion of health screening and TB clearance within seven (7) days of hire.
  • Other: Knowledge of program planning, implementation, and management; staff supervision, budgeting/fiscal management. Experience in community development, partnerships, and relations. Experience working with school personnel and school leadership. Familiarity with mandated reporting procedures, safety, and risk management

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $120,000-145,000 per year. This is not a remote position. The position will be based out of either a San Fernando Valley, West Los Angeles (LAX) or Santa Clarita Valley location.
