Lead Data Engineer

We are seeking a Lead Data Engineer to support, guide, and champion best practices and technology that enable scalable, standardized solutions to turn our wealth of weather, energy, and agricultural data into operational insights for our customers to help feed, fuel, and protect our world.  The ideal candidate is a consummate learner and teacher, as comfortable writing code as they are architecting and explaining innovative data engineering solutions across multiple teams and domains.  You will work with a wide variety of software and scientific engineers and data scientists to solve complex “big data” processing, storage, and delivery problems to maximize performance and minimize cost, ensuring high value for DTN and our customers. 

What you will be responsible for:  

• Building understanding of supported products and use cases to properly establish and document data engineering patterns, best practices, architecture, infrastructure and tooling  

• Collaborate closely with engineering managers and engineering squads to build, implement and support our data infrastructure and document current and future data architecture and identifying risks and opportunities  

• Lead frequent meetings with data engineers to ensure alignment and coordination 

• Govern, prioritize, and drive mitigation for technical debt/operational risk related data engineering and architecture  

• Coordinate and influence objective setting and help measure overall progress towards domain and solution level goals 

What you will bring to the role:  

• 8+ years data modeling, architecture and development using cloud-based services (AWS preferred) in a Linux environment  

• Experience working with data science tools and analytics with large, high-churn data sets and complex processing pipelines and commonly applied languages and tools (Airflow, Python, JupyterHub, etc.)  

• Experience in weather, agriculture, or energy is a plus 

• Proficient in CI/CD tooling, agile development and associated tools and service (Gitlab, JIRA, Confluence)  

• Broad expertise in various database technologies and platforms  with an ability to explain, persuade, and train a variety of personas in adoption of consistent data engineering practices   

• Able to communicate clearly in written and presentation format to a wide range of knowledge levels and diligence in documenting  

• Collaborative nature with a willingness to listen, learn, and lead technical architecture decisions across different levels and team

The targeted hiring base pay range for this position is between $120,000 and $160,000. DTN is a pay for performance organization, which means there is the opportunity to advance your compensation with performance over time. The actual base pay offered for this position will be dependent upon many factors, including but not limited to: prior work experience, training/education, transferable skills, business needs, internal equity and applicable laws. The targeted hiring base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for market competitive variable pay and benefits.
