Your missions

Astronomer designed Astro, a modern data orchestration platform, powered by Apache Airflow™. Astro enables companies to place Apache Airflow at the core of their data operations, providing ease of use, scalability, and enterprise-grade security, to ensure the reliable delivery of mission-critical data pipelines.

We’re a globally-distributed and rapidly growing venture-backed team of learners, innovators and collaborators. Our mission is to build an Enterprise-grade product that makes it easy for data teams at Fortune 500’s and startups alike to adopt Apache Airflow. As a member of our team, you will be at the forefront of the industry as we strive to deliver the world's data.

Your background may be unconventional; as long as you have the essential qualifications, we encourage you to apply. While having "bonus" qualifications makes for a strong candidate, Astronomer values diverse experiences. Many of us at Astronomer haven't followed traditional career paths, and we welcome it if yours hasn't either.

About this role:

We’re thrilled to be hiring for another Technical Writer to join our team and help shape the documentation experience for Astronomer and Apache Airflow users all over the world. We’re lucky to have been able to invest in documentation over the last few years, and our Astro Docs are widely recognized as some of the best in the industry.

At Astronomer, we see our documentation as an extension of our product. If you’re a product-minded technical writer or former developer passionate about translating complex technical concepts to engaging educational content within the context of open-source technology, this role is for you.

What you get to do:
  • Write, edit, and maintain Astro documentation within a Git-based workflow

  • Spend time digging into source code and meeting with members of the engineering and product to document existing and new functionality

  • Work with Product, Sales and Customer teams to triage internal and external feedback and prioritize requests to improve documentation

  • Work to ensure that our documentation is consistent with existing copy and UX presented in our product itself

  • Conduct user research to inform content hierarchy, content, format and presentation of public docs

  • Contribute to building our Astro documentation site to continuously improve the UX and infrastructure that powers the user-facing experience

  • Become proficient in data engineering and generative AI concepts and best practices, and have the opportunity to be directly involved in the development of one of the world’s biggest open source projects

What you bring to the role:

As an ideal candidate, you have…

  • 3+ years of experience in a technical writer role

  • Proficiency in Git, GitHub, and version control tooling

  • Experience writing content to for developers and/or technical audiences in Markdown

  • Experience working with products containing APIs, CLIs, and SDKs

  • You have enough of a developer background that you can read API requests and read code written in Python or Bash CLI commands and capture nuances in documentation

  • You’re conversant in cloud provider services and concepts like infrastructure management, authentication, and enterprise needs

  • You’re a strong verbal and written communicator. You have a knack for breaking down complex technical concepts into engaging and digestible content

  • You’re self-driven, you love to write and you’re passionate about technology

  • You have an eye for detail and an opinion on whether we should title a navigation menu “Develop Locally” or “Developing Locally”

  • You have a portfolio of technical writing samples that you’re willing to share

Bonus points if you have:
  • Apache Airflow

  • Kubernetes

  • Docusaurus

  • Figma

The estimated salary for this role ranges from $100,000 - $150,000, along with an equity component. This range is merely an estimate, and the width of the range reflects willingness to consider candidates with broad prior seniority. Actual compensation may deviate from this range based on skills, experience, and qualifications.
